This role is responsible for GPS layout, machine control setup, data management, modeling adjustments, hardware troubleshooting, and grade verification in a high-production environment.This position plays a critical role in ensuring trenching, duct banks, grounding systems, equipment foundations, and mass excavation are built accurately and pass inspection the first time.Key ResponsibilitiesGPS & Field OperationsOperate data collectors and rover unitsPerform localization and verify project controlEstablish temporary and permanent base stationsVerify control points and benchmarksPerform pre-construction and daily layout/stakeoutComplete as-built data acquisition and reportingMaintain thorough QA/QC documentationMachine Control & Heavy EquipmentOperate heavy equipment equipped with GPS systems(dozers, excavators, graders, etc.)Setup, calibrate, and verify GPS machine control systemsBuild and adjust surfaces, points, and linework in the fieldManage project files between field units and machinesInstall, troubleshoot, and repair sensors, antennas, cables, and hardwareSupport operators in real-time productionSubstation & Power Infrastructure SupportLayout and verify power duct banks and conduit runsConfirm trench depth, bedding grades, and grounding grid elevationsVerify equipment pad and foundation elevationsMonitor yard cut/fill and drainage slopesEnsure compliance with civil and electrical drawingsModeling & Data ManagementRead and interpret civil, structural, and electrical blueprintsUtilize Civil 3D, Carlson, Magnet, Bentley, or similar platformsPerform quantity takeoffsManage data from project inception through closeoutResolve field model discrepancies and make real-time correctionsUnderstand datums, projections, and units of measurementHardware & Technical TroubleshootingDiagnose and repair GPS rovers and data collectorsUpdate firmware and softwareTroubleshoot networking and localization issuesMaintain machine-mounted GPS systemsHardware familiarity may include: Trimble, Topcon, John Deere Integrated GPS, Total Stations, Laser systems, Theodolites, and Builder's Levels.Top OutcomesAccurate grade control with zero reworkReliable machine control performanceClean, inspection-ready documentationReal-time model corrections that protect scheduleFull understanding of daily site GPS processesQualifications3+ years heavy civil GPS or survey experience (substation/power preferred)Experience operating GPS-equipped heavy equipmentStrong machine control backgroundExperience with mass excavation, duct banks, and structural foundationsProficiency in modeling and takeoff softwareStrong math, elevation calculation, and problem-solving skillsMechanically inclined with the ability to troubleshoot hardwareWork Environment & Physical RequirementsOutdoor heavy civil construction sitesSubstations, renewable energy, and power infrastructure projectsAbility to work long hours, overtime, and travelStand for extended periods and navigate uneven terrainLift and maintain GPS and related equipmentReady to Join Our Team?If you're ready to bring your expertise and passion for construction to a growing company, apply today and be part of a team that values quality, integrity, and precision in every project!R-2 Contractors is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
