This position has a highly visible role and is responsible for daily operations, providing custodial services and dealing with students and staff on a regular basis. All head custodians interact with individuals both inside and out of the corporation and therefore, must have the ability to present a professional and organized image at all times. The Head Custodian may be required to work in other Duneland School Corporation facilities.Starting Hourly Rate: $21.47MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIESProvide leadership and supervision for the building custodial staffPerform a variety of tasks involving general care of the building and grounds; the work involves cleaning, repairing, and maintainingLead by example by maintaining assigned work areas to expectations and through proper usage of equipmentManage and supervise overall work schedules and assignments for custodial staff, and coordinate additional tasks with building administrators. Coordinate with Utility Techs for proper athletic coverage as appropriate.Train new employees in proper cleaning, maintenance, and usage of equipment.Responsible for departmental payroll and building use formsMonitor, track and report any overtime usage or shift time changes to the Custodial Manager.Conduct shift meetingsOversee that the building and premises are kept neat and clean at all timesInventory, maintain and order custodial supplies and equipment for the buildingInspect and maintain equipment on a regular basis to ensure proper functioning and usage and in accordance with local, state and federal standardsReport repairs and maintenance through work ordersKeep records of regular maintenance of filters, motors, pumps, fans etc.Conduct inspections on a daily, weekly and monthly basis and in accordance with directives from the Custodial ManagerWork with the Custodial Manager to assist with the discipline of custodians for attendance issues, performance issues and misuse of equipmentSchedule, monitor, and provide service for special events arranged by Duneland School Corporation.Assist building administrators in working with special groups who use the building in the off hours and schedules custodians for events.Demonstrate necessary organizational skills and leadership skillsMonitor building construction projects and refer questions to Custodial Manager, Facilities Manager, and Director of Facilities.The Head Custodian will keep in daily contact with their building principal for any schedule changes or activities being heldRespond to requests of information and services in a prompt, efficient and friendly manner.Provide exceptional level of customer service to all students, community members, teachers, co-workers and other staff members. This position must assure their needs are met in a professional, friendly and timely manner.Observe safety and security procedures.All custodial service staff are required to attend all in-service training.All custodial service employees must accept delegated authority.All custodial service employees must assist the grounds services department with grass cutting, landscape maintenance and snow removal.Occasionally assist in all services provided throughout Duneland School Corporation.Daily delivery of bulk food products and supplies.May assist the Food Service Department in product stocking and storage.Perform all other duties as assigned by an immediate supervisor.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with persons at all levels in order to develop and maintain productive relationships both inside and outside the corporation.Ability to learn new skills quickly and assimilate into daily work.Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality both inside and outside the corporation.Ability to work independently and in a team environment.Ability to multi-task with attention to detail.Proficiency in the use of all custodial service equipment.Proficiency in the use of various grounds equipment.Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.Recognize, analyze and offer solutions to problem situations related to daily work.May be required to become certified in various custodial service programs.Ability to remain calm and professional during times of high stress.Directly supervises all assigned custodial staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, training, planning, assigning, employee performance evaluation, staff discipline and resolving custodial service problems and complaints.Must possess the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions.Must possess the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (includes equipment, hours, physical demands)Work Environment: Periodic exposure to inclement weather conditions may occur depending upon assignments.Equipment: This position is required to maintain a working knowledge of all custodial services equipment. Must possess basic knowledge of grounds and building maintenance tools. A basic knowledge of operations concerning computers, printers, telephone systems, fax machines and copiers is required.Hours: This position is typically expected to work an average of 8 hours per day. Summer hours will be adjusted as per the Superintendent to assure adequate coverage throughout the summer period. Evening, weekend, early morning and holiday activities will be scheduled as necessary. Head Custodians are required to be on 24 hour call to respond to facility related problems.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by all Duneland School Corporation head custodians. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds.
