Plant Maintenance Technician
I. Position Summary
The Plant Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing all mechanical, electrical, and process equipment within the Material Recovery Facility (MRF). This role ensures that plant systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently to support production goals and regulatory requirements.
The Plant Maintenance Technician responds to equipment failures, performs preventive maintenance, and supports continuous improvement efforts to minimize downtime and extend asset life. This position plays a critical role in supporting Municipal Waste Solutions’ mission to be a GREAT PLACE TO WORK while DELIVERING GREAT BUSINESS RESULTS.
II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs in accordance with company safety policies, Life Critical Rules, and OSHA requirements.
Execute preventive and corrective maintenance on plant equipment including, but not limited to: Balers, conveyors, gearboxes, pulleys, shafts, and bearings, hydraulic power packs, pumps, fans, and compressors, Eddy current separators, magnets, optical sorters, and diverters, glass breakers, wire-tie systems, and trash compactors, forklifts, front-end loaders, and other mobile equipment, building systems and general facility infrastructure
Diagnose equipment failures, determine root cause, and complete repairs independently or in coordination with other maintenance staff or vendors.
Maintain Daily Equipment Inspection (DEI) backlogs and ensure timely resolution of identified issues.
Perform emergency service calls and breakdown repairs to restore operations as quickly and safely as possible.
Coordinate work activities with the Plant Maintenance Manager to meet production schedules and communicate when repairs exceed standard repair time expectations.
Inspect and evaluate the quality of third-party repairs, rebuilds, or contractor work.
Recommend improvements to equipment reliability, maintenance practices, and operational performance.
Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, parts used, and equipment condition (CMMS or manual logs as applicable).
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area; follow all lockout/tagout, confined space, and PPE requirements.
Support other operational areas as needed based on business and facility needs.
III. Qualifications
A. Required Qualifications
Minimum 2 years of experience in industrial, manufacturing, recycling, or waste-processing maintenance.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Legally authorized to work in the United States.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must successfully complete pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check.
B. Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), recycling plant, or similar heavy-industrial operation.
Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of conveyors, hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, and rotating equipment.
Experience using hand tools, power tools, and basic diagnostic equipment.
Electrical troubleshooting experience (motors, starters, sensors, basic controls) is a plus.
Familiarity with CMMS systems and preventive maintenance programs.
IV. Work Schedule & Environment
Requires a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and overtime as needed to support facility operations and maintenance outages.
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor industrial environments, with exposure to dust, noise, odors, moving equipment, and varying weather conditions.
Must be comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and around heavy equipment.
V. Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and reaching.
Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and tools up to 50 pounds.
Use of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination for tools, equipment operation, and repairs.
Exposure to physical and occupational risks typical of an industrial maintenance environment; adherence to safety procedures is mandatory.
