Nursery Buyer
Job SummaryThe Nursery Buyer is responsible for sourcing and purchasing plant material to support sales and nursery operations. This role develops and maintains strong vendor relationships, negotiates pricing, and ensures accurate and timely purchasing processes. By creating purchase orders, resolving shipment issues, and coordinating logistics, the Nursery Buyer helps maintain inventory accuracy, supports special projects, and contributes to the company's ability to provide high-quality plant material to customers.In short, the Nursery Buyer focuses on identifying, negotiating, and securing plant material while managing purchasing transactions and vendor coordination.Essential FunctionsResearch and source special-order plant material for the Sales Team.Maintain positive and productive relationships with vendors.Update and maintain accurate vendor information within company systems.Create purchase orders, verify receipt of items, and resolve shipment errors or damages with vendors.Negotiate effectively with vendors to obtain optimal pricing without compromising quality.Process approval documentation promptly to ensure timely vendor payments.Act as a liaison between vendors and internal departments within the company.Coordinate with vendors to schedule or expedite deliveries and resolve shortages, missed deliveries, late shipments, or other issues.Address logistical challenges related to transporting plant material to the correct locations in a timely manner.Stay informed about product availability, pricing changes, vendor terms, and discounts.Participate in pricing projects, updates, and special or annual inventory initiatives.Assist with administrative tasks and company projects as needed.Experience and Other RequirementsRequiredMinimum 2 years of experience working in a nursery, horticulture, or related industry.Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.Strong written and verbal communication skills.PreferredExperience creating purchase orders within software systems.Experience working with inventory or purchasing management systems.Work Environment & Physical RequirementsThis is an in-office position, with no work-from-home option except for short-term exceptions approved by upper management.The position requires remaining in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods. Extensive typing and use of 10-key data entry are required. Use of hands and fingers for typing, grasping, and handling materials is necessary.The employee will frequently move between the office and nursery yard environments and may experience outdoor weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, dust, plant material, moisture, and seasonal allergens.Physical requirements include:Remaining in a stationary position for extended periods.Frequent typing and use of hands and fingers.Occasional walking in nursery yard environments.Lifting up to 20 lbs. approximately 20% of the time when required.Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
