Environmental Engineer, Construction In this role you will develop, implement, improve, and maintain environmental compliance programs at SpaceX’s Hawthorne, CA location, supporting Falcon/Dragon, Raptor/Starship, and Starlink/Starshield teams site‑wide. You will oversee day‑to‑day environmental site management for fast‑paced manufacturing and high‑impact construction projects, and collaborate with federal, state, county, and local regulators. Responsibilities Develop, implement, improve, and maintain environmental compliance programs supporting Falcon/Dragon, Raptor/Starship, and Starlink/Starshield teams site‑wide. Own day‑to‑day environmental site management for fast‑paced manufacturing and high‑impact construction projects. Implement, enforce, and audit the site‑wide Soil Management Plan (SMP) to ensure all requirements are understood and followed by employees, contractors, and subcontractors. Conduct monitoring and sampling required by the SMP, including volatile organic compounds via PID, methane monitoring, VOC air sampling per EPA Method TO‑15, dust mitigation, and other applicable monitoring. Handle waste sampling, profiling, and disposal of hazardous waste from construction projects. Develop, maintain, and report on Hazardous Materials Business Plans (HMBPs). Maintain compliance with regulations from agencies such as the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), California Air Quality Management Districts, Los Angeles County Sanitation District, Regional Water Quality Control Board, and other applicable bodies. Review new and proposed environmental laws and regulations; guide management and develop practical solutions. Operate and maintain compliance calendars, record‑keeping systems, and environmental tracking software; maintain site‑wide SMP and HMBPs. Coordinate and manage contractors for permitting, environmental testing, and assessments; review and maintain related reports and records. Assist in planning for changes in physical facilities, reviewing new/modified equipment and manufacturing/construction programs to meet regulatory and permitting requirements. Ensure appropriate allocation of resources to environmental requirements related to the SMP. Develop and maintain positive relationships with regulators and work collaboratively with engineering, production, operations, and construction teams across sites. Assist the broader Environmental team with site operational compliance as needed. Basic Qualifications 4+ years of professional experience in designing, developing, and executing environmental and regulatory compliance programs, preferably in manufacturing and/or construction environments. Preferred Skills and Experience Bachelor’s degree in engineering with an emphasis in environmental engineering. Experience with environmental remediation and implementing all aspects of a site‑wide Soil Management Plan required by DTSC. 6+ years of environmental and regulatory compliance experience in a dynamic manufacturing environment. California regulatory and environmental compliance experience. Experience working with agencies such as DTSC, CUPA, EPA, California Air Quality Management Districts, Los Angeles County Sanitation District, and Regional Water Quality Control Board. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook). Experience with emergency response communication and incident management involving hazardous or non‑hazardous material releases to air, soil, and water. Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience handling highly technical data, interpreting and applying rules/regulations toward practical solutions. Track record of successful collaboration in integrated team environments (interactions with engineers, managers, and regulatory agencies). Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize work efficiently, and drive continuous improvement in high‑pressure environments. Highly self‑motivated with strong organizational skills. Additional Requirements This is not a remote or hybrid position and will require relocation if not already local to the Hawthorne, CA area. Position occasionally requires the ability to work extended hours and weekends when needed. Compensation and Benefits Pay Range: Level1: $95,000.00 – $115,000.00 Level2: $110,000.00 – $135,000.00 Base salary is one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX.
