Florida A&M University Police Department is pleased to announce the acceptance of qualified applications for a Police Communications Operator vacancy. Responsibilities The men and women of this department are committed to serving the students, visitors, faculty, and staff of Florida A&M University by providing excellent services within our community and providing an environment where people can live, visit and work safely without fear. This is non-sworn law enforcement work that operates and monitors telephone; Radio transmissions via a two-way police radio; Computer systems in a public safety communications center; Receive and evaluate calls from the public requesting police assistance of both emergency and non-emergency nature; Receive and transmit messages to and from FAMU law enforcement officers on complaints, crimes in progress and general police communications; Refer callers to appropriate agencies or extensions; and use a computer terminal to update and monitor the unit status, as well as, transmit requests for emergency services. Monitor surveillance cameras and building alarms regarding fires and illegal entry and dispatches the same to appropriate personnel; Monitor the police scanner for emergency situations occurring in and around the general campus area as well as the inner city; Relay messages regarding the safety and conditions of police officers performing hazardous duties; and make written records of all radio and telephone transmissions, messages, and complaints to and from officers and the general public as required by the F.C.C. and the FAMU Police Department. Operate the FCIC/NCIC criminal computer according to rules and regulations established by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and follow all rules and regulations as stated in the Communications standard operating pros (SOP) manual; Operate a personal computer system that provides information from criminal justice information system (CTIS) and the University, for student records and employee addresses, housing information and auto registration; Assist in the operation and transmission of the Everbridge Campus Notification and the Federal Warning Systems; Operates the T.D.D. machine for the hearing impaired; Work special details as needed, and perform other related duties as required; and ability to work University's special events. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalency and one year of work experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Successful completion of the State 911 Certification and NCIC/FCIC systems test is required within six months of hire to remain employed. Recommended Competencies Knowledge of all phases of police communications; Knowledge of computer terminal and FClC/NCIC rules and regulations; Knowledge of enhanced 911-system; Knowledge of the criminal justice information system; Ability to utilize conflict resolution skills; Ability to demonstrate critical thinking based upon in-depth data, substantiating information, considering, and respecting others input and personal values and ethics; Ability to respond to the public in a courteous, calm, and effective manner; Ability to communicate effectively in writing; Ability to differentiate emergency from non-emergency situations; Ability to function under stress and in emergency situations and make independent decisions; Ability to function and perform basic computer functions independently with minimal supervision; Advanced ability to gather, interpret, report, and/or edit information; Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations; Ability to utilize problem solving skills; and Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices. Preferred Qualifications High school diploma or equivalency and two years of work experience. Certified as a State 911 but must obtain certification and NCIC/FCIC systems within six months to remain employed. Anticipated Salary Range Salary is 43,561.00 Licenses and Certifications Successful completion of the State 911 Certification and NCIC/FCIC systems test is required within six months of hire in order to remain employed. Pay Plan This is an USPS (University Support Personnel System) position. Conditions of Employment Successful candidate is subject to a pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks and verification of education.
