Sr Scientist, Merchant Optimization

About The RoleSenior Data Scientist on the Merchant Optimization team, focusing on identifying the optimal merchant selection for consumers and innovating pricing models to enable merchant participation in the marketplace. The role aims to maximize merchant ROI while driving growth and profitability across the Delivery business. You will leverage advanced experimentation, machine learning, and an understanding of marketplace dynamics to develop data-driven solutions that influence product direction and improve marketplace efficiency. The ideal candidate has strong technical expertise, a track record of impact through analytical methods, and the ability to partner with product, engineering, and operations teams to deliver scalable solutions.What You Will DoLead and mentor a team of data scientists and applied scientists, fostering a culture of innovation and impact.Design and execute rigorous A/B experiments to optimize pricing, incentives, and other marketplace levers.Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and operations teams to drive strategic decision-making.Generate actionable insights from large-scale data sets to inform short-term execution and long-term product direction.Define and measure key success metrics, ensuring alignment with business goals.Advocate for best practices in data science, model monitoring, and causal inference within the organization.Propose and guide a framework of data analysis and experiments to drive business insight and facilitate decisions.Collaborate with Engineering and Product teams to productionize models, enhance data observability and metrics with dashboards, and conduct experiments and in-depth analysis.Communicate with leadership and cross-functional teams, including presentation of the Science team's work on models, solutions, and data analytics findings.Basic QualificationsPh.D./M.S. degree in Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Operations Research, or other quantitative fields.Minimum 5 years of industry experience as a Scientist or equivalent (3+ years if holding a Ph.D. degree).Experience with exploratory data analysis, statistical analysis and testing, causal analysis and ML model development.Experience with SQL or R in a production environment.Bias to action and proven track record of getting things done.Proficiency using Python, PySpark at scale with large data sets.Experience partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to execute decisions.Experience in tech or marketplace industries.Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights.Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders.Preferred QualificationsExperience in a marketplace, ride-sharing, or delivery platform.Knowledge of reinforcement learning, optimization algorithms, or econometrics.Prior experience working with large-scale distributed systems and real-time data processing.Compensation and BenefitsFor San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD 190,000 per year - USD 211,000 per year. For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD 190,000 per year - USD 211,000 per year. All US locations: eligibility to participate in Uber's bonus program, potential equity awards, and other compensation.
