Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.Department consist of specialty trained RN's , over 50% certified in the specialty, who place IV catheters into the central vascular of the body, the heart, via ultrasound technology, in a minimally invasive procedure. Nurses are also skilled at difficult peripheral IV placement, implanted venous port access, care and maintenance and Intraosseous needle placement. Staff are also involved in teaching nurses, MD's and others. There is participation and ownership in the Vascular Access Policy and Procedures for the Hospital. They also participate in choosing products needed for our use.
