Senior Substation Engineer

Senior Substation Engineer (Contract-to-Hire)Location: Cary, NCWe are seeking a Senior Substation Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity based in Cary, NC. This role will support substation projects from concept through construction, working closely with project teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions that meet client expectations, budget constraints, and schedule requirements.Key ResponsibilitiesSupport substation projects from conceptual design through project completionPrepare and develop comprehensive substation design packages, including:Physical arrangement (above and below grade)Protection & control (P&C) systemsGrounding, lightning protection, lighting, and security systemsPerform engineering calculations, including:Insulation coordinationAC station service and DC system design (including battery sizing)Voltage drop, cable sizing, and conduit fillDevelop design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specifications, and bill of materialsApply knowledge of industry standards such as IEEE, NESC, and utility-specific requirementsConduct and support field inspections for substation facilitiesCollaborate with project managers to maintain schedules and meet deadlinesParticipate in QA/QC reviews and perform design quality checksResearch and compile technical data to support project executionAssist with client presentations, reports, and technical visualizationsIdentify and help resolve technical and project-related issuesSupport proposal development and client presentations during the pursuit phaseBuild and maintain strong client relationshipsRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field from an ABET-accredited program and a minimum of 3 years of substation engineering experience (consulting preferred)ORBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the FE exam, and a minimum of 3 years of substation engineering experience (consulting preferred)Additional Requirements:Internship experience does not count toward required years of experienceExperience with physical design and/or protection & control (P&C) requiredStrong knowledge of engineering principles and ability to apply them across diverse assignmentsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsStrong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilitiesProficiency in Microsoft Office SuiteHigh attention to detail and strong organizational skillsAbility to work effectively in a collaborative team environmentDemonstrated leadership capabilitiesAbility to develop innovative solutions to engineering challengesPreferred QualificationsEngineer in Training (EIT) certificationProfessional Engineer (PE) licenseAspen Technical StaffingCELEBRATING 25 YEARS          ~2001-2026~We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
