Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic ChurchSacristanReports to: PastorFull TimeFLSA: Hourly Non-ExemptGENERAL SUMMARY: The Sacristan is responsible for preparing and caring for the sacred vessels, vestments, linens, and liturgical spaces of the parish to ensure that all liturgical celebrations are conducted reverently, orderly, and in accordance with the norms of the Roman Catholic Church. The Sacristan supports the pastor, clergy, and liturgical ministers by overseeing practical and logistical aspects of the liturgy.Duties And ResponsibilitiesLiturgical Preparation & SupportPrepare the sanctuary, sacristy, and church for all liturgical celebrations (Masses, weddings, funerals, Holy Days, special devotions).Set out and properly arrange sacred vessels, books, linens, and other liturgical items.Prepare altar bread (hosts) and wine according to liturgical norms.Assist clergy before and after liturgies as needed.Ensure proper setup and cleanup of the altar and sanctuary following each liturgy.Care Of Sacred ItemsMaintain, clean, and properly store sacred vessels, vestments, altar linens, and liturgical books.Coordinate laundering of altar linens in accordance with Church norms (including proper disposal of water used for sacred linens).Monitor inventory of liturgical supplies (hosts, wine, candles, incense, charcoal, oils, etc.) and notify appropriate staff when replenishment is needed.Sacristy & Church CareMaintain cleanliness and order of the sacristy and sanctuary areas.Ensure candles, sanctuary lamp, and other liturgical elements are properly maintained.Report any maintenance, repair, or safety concerns related to the church or sacristy.Coordination & CommunicationCoordinate with clergy, music ministry, altar servers, lectors, eucharistic ministers and other liturgical ministers as needed.Assist with training or guidance of volunteer sacristans or altar servers, if applicable.Follow parish and diocesan liturgical guidelines and directives.Knowledge, Skills, And AbilitiesPracticing Catholic in good standing with a solid understanding of Catholic liturgy and sacramental life.Familiarity with the Roman Missal and liturgical norms preferred.Strong attention to detail, reverence, and respect for sacred spaces and objects.Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality.Physically able to stand, walk, lift, and carry liturgical items as required.Language SkillsAbility to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, vendors, employees, and the public.Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.REASONING ABILITYAbility to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
