I. Job SummaryUnder the general direction of the Effingham Cancer Care Center Nurse Manager, the Medical Assistant is an essential member of the care team responsible for coordinating daily patient care in the oncology clinic. Works to continually improve patient satisfaction and holistic patient care.II. Essential Job ResponsibilitiesEfficiently documents and navigates in the Cerner EMR system.Works in conjunction with the physicians, APPs, and nurses to provide comprehensive and safe patient care while implementing the orders which were given.Appropriately communicates updates with patients and providers/nurse manager during extended wait times in a timely manner.Clearly communicates urgent patient needs, patient status changes, out of range vital signs, symptoms, or test results, etc. to the providers or a nurse in a timely manner.Reviews clinic schedules in advance to prepare for the day. This helps prioritize the needs of the patients and clinic, such as patients who have office visits, labs, and treatment on the same day, or if they are having a procedure or imaging same day vs ahead of time. Preparing notes for self to assist with maintaining efficiency keep the clinicMaintains open line of communication with the nurse manager regarding any issues, needs, and any ideas for improving processes and workflows.Reviews the previous visit note / treatment note and flowsheets prior to the patient’s scheduled office visit and ensures all ordered test results are available in the EMR for physician / APP review prior to the patient’s scheduled appointment. This is to be done in advance of the schedule appointment(s) to have the opportunity to obtain required documentation for clinical decision making, ensuring patients completed any imaging, testing, or procedure ordered, or rescheduling patients to prevent a wasted appointment.Prepares patients for evaluation and management of care by obtaining and documenting vital signs and any new patient issues / concerns in the EMR.Reviews patient medications for accuracy at every visit; documents any changes in medications in the EMR in a timely manner.Reviews lab orders entered by physician / APPs and coordinates in-house labs or performs phlebotomy as needed.Obtains pre-certifications when required for external medication prescriptions, or any diagnostic procedures or imaging, which may include sending required documentation, coordinating schedules with patients or other facilities performing follow up by phone or electronically.Triages and takes appropriate actions to manage patient needs when requested over the telephone; frequently checks missed phone calls / voicemails and returns messages in a timely manner.Collects and appropriately documents patients’ vitals and any changes in a timely manner in the EMR system.Escorting or assisting in the transportation of patients to different areas of the building, to their vehicles, to the restroom, etc.Maintain cleanliness and supplies in each exam room and clinic workspace between patients or more often as needed.Completes all clerical required duties in a timely manner such patient care forms, medical histories, reconciliation of medications, completing patient work up documentation, managing the MA fax line, keeping up to date with the referral management system, following up on outgoing orders and incoming results, scanning documents in the EMR, etc.Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations.III. Minimal Qualifications EducationHigh school diploma or GED requiredCompletion of a medical assistant program requiredAssociate degree in a healthcare-related field preferredCompletion of a phlebotomy training program preferredExperience:3-4 Years Of General Medical Office Experience Required1-2 years of oncology medical office experience preferred1-2 years of phlebotomy experience preferred, including venipuncture and blood collection clinical settings such as laboratory, infusion centers, ER/urgent care, hospital setting, or medical office environmentExperience assisting with in-office bone marrow biopsy procedures preferred, including patient preparation and specimen handlingCertification / LicenseMedical assistant certification, certified nursing assistant (CNA) and/or EMT license / certificate preferredPhlebotomy certification preferred
