Lays pipeline using connection bars to lock sections together. Turns pipeline periodically to offset wear. Extends lines by rolling pipe over assembled pipe used as a track for this purpose. Sets blocks and utilizes crowbars in handling pipeline sections that measure 23" to 30" in diameter, up to 30 feet in length and weigh up to 3700 lb. Repairs break in lines by banding ruptured areas. Splices are broken pipe sections with rubber sleeves. Attach clamps, tighten fittings by means of wrenches. Disconnects pipeline by prying loose at joints using connection bars. Eliminate chokes from valve or "Y" fittings by removing plates and pulling obstructions from pipe by hand. Repairs banks of washes, leaks and rat holes; performs landscaping operations utilizing chainsaws, gas powered engine lawnmowers and weed whackers, cuts weeds and removes trash from disposal basins. Stencils pipe sections as Government property. Loads and unloads pipeline, tools and supplies from trucks or barges. Digs underground passes for running pipeline beneath roadways. Performs rough carpentry duties and steel work in building pipeline trestles, splash boards, spillways, steel sluice sump boxes and other wooden structures peculiar to a disposal area, including clearing of drainage ditches. Repairs these items by replacing defective boards, by strengthening weakened walls with sheet piling, building stake lines to support splash boards. Use saws, hammers and axes to accomplish this work. Performs those deck maintenance, repair, general housekeeping and miscellaneous duties peculiar to maritime activities. Handles and fastens hawsers and mooring lines. Splices cable and rope. Performs various rigging duties. Sweeps and mops deck. Greases and cleans cables, winches, deck machinery, etc. Prepare surfaces to be painted by removing old paint with remover, by chipping and/or scraping. Applies interior and exterior paint and varnishes. Loads and unloads supplies. Operates winches and booms and miscellaneous deck equipment, as directed. Set range markers and lanterns; works as a member of a gang in connecting, disconnecting, repairing and replacing pipeline; shifts pontoons and secures catwalks; installs and/or repairs pilings, trestles, fenders, etc. Acts as a helper to tradesman and higher-grade crew members in repairing and overhauling equipment by dismantling, adjusting and reassembling as directed. Uses hand tools such as drills, impact wrenches, saws, etc. in accomplishing tasks. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Pipeline Worker without more than normal supervision. May frequently be required to lift objects weighing over 50 pounds.Working ConditionsPipeline work is performed in marshy land in all weather conditions. Disagreeable odors occur frequently. The possibility of being cut or bruised when using saws, axes and hammers exists. Serious injury may occur when moving pipeline capable of crushing hands and toes. Deckhand work is performed inside and outside under all weather conditions. The danger of being hit by swinging equipment or material being lifted exists. Exposed to paint fumes and eye injuries when chipping. There is a possibility of cutting or bruising fingers. The danger of slipping and falling, especially under wet or icy conditions, with the danger of drowning, is frequently present. This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. Position will require occasional travel outside the Philadelphia District to assist other Districts or for training. This will also involve overnight stays. Due to the safety requirement in the EM-385-1-1 Section 10.A.07a, employee must obtain a Welding Certification within the first two years of employment provided by the Army Corps of Engineers. This position requires that the incumbent possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
