Hardware Platform & Component Library Engineer Intern
*About Makeable*
Makeable is a San Francisco based company backed by Afore Capital. We are building a beginner-friendly platform that turns an idea into a compatible electronics kit, printable enclosure, wiring guide, firmware, and clear assembly steps.
The role
This is a paid, full-time, 12-week internship starting in November 2026. You will build Makeable's tested component library: exact electronics sourced, measured, modelled, documented, and proven to work together without soldering or specialist experience.
What you will do
Source exact modules from Chinese OEM and ODM suppliers and compare revisions, samples, substitutions, pricing, and lead times.
Bench-test electrical, firmware, and mechanical compatibility across controllers, sensors, displays, motors, cables, and connectors.
Measure and scan components, verify CAD geometry, and create digital-twin packages for Makeable's library.
Document pinouts, protocols, current limits, firmware examples, failure cases, and beginner assembly steps.
Create reference builds and reject parts that are unreliable, require soldering, or are too easy to connect incorrectly.
What we are looking for
Evidence of electronics, robotics, embedded systems, hardware kits, or product prototypes you personally built and tested.
Experience with ESP32 or Arduino, sensors, communication protocols, power constraints, and embedded firmware.
Comfort with CAD, dimensional measurement, 3D printing, supplier communication, and methodical quality assurance.
A portfolio, GitHub, build log, or project documentation showing how you diagnose hardware problems.
Location and pay
San Francisco is preferred, with a hybrid working setup. We may consider exceptional remote candidates based in the United States or Singapore. Relocation to San Francisco is welcomed, and visa support may be considered.
Pay is USD 19.61 to USD 20.20 per hour, based on 40 hours per week. Strong interns may be considered for a later full-time role, with compensation and equity discussed then.
Application
Show us an electronics or robotics project you personally built. Explain one compatibility failure you found and how you proved the fix. Include links, photos, CAD, firmware, or build documentation.
Pay: $19.61 - $20.20 per hour
People with a criminal record are encouraged to apply
