Specialty Coder - General Surgery (Profee)

Requirements: General Surgery Specialty Certification from AAPC, Profee Only Experience (physician coding only) Employee must have a laptop and two monitors available to work from. Must have at least 2 years experience Job Summary The Specialty Coder is selected by Health Coding Leadership to focus advanced coding skills and expertise on designated high-dollar or specialty inpatient or outpatient account types. This role is responsible for maintaining current and accurate ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and/or CPT coding for inpatient and/or outpatient diagnoses and procedures through the review of clinical documentation and diagnostic results, with a consistent coding accuracy rate of 95% or higher. The Specialty Coder will accurately abstract data into all appropriate electronic medical record systems, verify accurate patient dispositions and physician data, and follow official ICD-10-CM/PCS and AMA CPT coding guidelines. This position collaborates with departments such as Health Information Management (HIM) and Clinical Documentation Improvement to ensure accurate and complete physician documentation that supports appropriate billing and reduces denials. The coder may also assist in other departmental areas as requested by leadership. The Specialty Coder reports directly to their Regional Coding Manager, with additional oversight from the Director of Coding Operations and System HIM Director. Major Job Responsibilities Meets expectations of applicable Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders. Assigns codes for diagnoses, treatments, and procedures according to ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting through review of critical clinical documentation to generate appropriate MS-DRG/APR-DRG. Abstracts required information from source documentation into the appropriate electronic medical record system. Validates admission orders and discharge dispositions. Works from assigned coding queues, completing and re-assigning accounts appropriately. Manages accounts on ABS Hold, finalizing once corrections are made in a timely manner. Maintains a coding accuracy rate of 95% or higher. Meets or exceeds established productivity standards based on chart type. Abides by AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding. Assists in implementing solutions to reduce backend errors. Identifies and accurately reports all hospital-acquired conditions (HACs). Expertly queries providers for missing or unclear documentation in collaboration with HIM and Clinical Documentation Specialists. Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills. Works independently in a remote setting with minimal supervision. Participates in internal audits and other departmental initiatives as required.
