Housing Specialist (GDH)

Qualifications Bachelor's degree in human services area (psychology, social work, education, etc.). Two years’ experience in the housing field, and knowledge of housing regulations and availability in New York City area (including Section 8 certificate/voucher housing, 202 housing, SRO, etc.) Ability to form relationships with community representatives in order to link residents with appropriate permanent housing settings Ability to travel on public transportation to all areas of New York City Knowledge of New York City entitlements including Medicaid, SSI, Income Maintenance, Food Stamps, etc. Excellent communication and engagement skills Additional Desired Qualifications Bilingual (Spanish/English) Experience working with older adults, formerly homeless, mental health diagnoses or substance abusers Certified in basic First Aid and CPR Job Description This position reports to the Director of Social Services. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Develop and conduct "housing readiness" group for residents Coach clients on interview skills and escort clients to housing interviews Review housing packages and submit to Department of Homeless Services Complete and submit other non-DHS housing applications (e.g. Enriched Housing) Maintain database to track DHS housing packages to ensure they are submitted/resubmitted on a timely basis Create and maintain a database of available permanent housing in New York City area suitable for residents Contact housing providers and arrange rental viewings (rental agencies, check ads online, Assisted Living Facilities, etc.) Write case notes in files and CARES Assist residents to secure a place on appropriate housing waiting lists throughout New York City, and monitor status of waiting lists Serve as a consultant to caseworkers in areas of entitlements and housing Participate in regular, ongoing supervision meetings with Director of Social Services, Program Director and participate in social service and other staff meetings as needed Assist in providing crisis intervention when necessary Carry a small case load as needed for clients already linked to housing Other duties as needed The New York Foundation for Senior Citizens, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, color, age, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.
