Electrical Engineer

Position SummaryWe are seeking a highly qualified Electrical Engineer (R&D) with deep expertise in analog, digital, and radio frequency (RF) circuit design, along with substantial hands-on experience in embedded hardware and firmware development.The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong combination of technical excellence, innovation, and collaborative effectiveness, and will play a key role in the development, optimization, and support of electronic subsystems for both next-generation and existing products in mass spectrometry instrumentation.This role is primarily onsite in Ithaca, with hybrid arrangements considered based on project requirements and team collaboration needs.Key Responsibilities1. Electronic Hardware Design & Development (Mass Spectrometry Systems)Design, develop, optimize, and maintain analog, digital, and mixed-signal electronic systems and critical modules for mass spectrometry productsLead the design and implementation of complex circuit solutions, including:RF/DC driversHigh-voltage power suppliesLow-noise signal acquisition circuitsDetector analog front-end (AFE) systemsOwn PCB schematic capture and oversee layout and routing, ensuring:EMC/EMI complianceSignal integrity and noise suppressionHigh-voltage safety and system reliabilityEvaluate and refine designs to meet performance, cost, and manufacturability goals2. Cross-Functional Product Development & System IntegrationCollaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, software, and test engineering) to:Evaluate product conceptsDevelop and iterate prototypesSupport system integration, testing, and validationParticipate in prototype bring-up, debugging, and performance verificationDiagnose and resolve hardware-, firmware-, and system-level issuesContribute to architecture and technical decision-making throughout the product lifecycle to ensure scalable, robust solutions3. Technical Resource Coordination & Advanced Problem SolvingEstablish and maintain relationships with external technical consultants and qualified suppliersLeverage external expertise to resolve complex technical challenges and accelerate development timelinesSupport troubleshooting of manufacturing and quality issues in low-volume production environmentsDrive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product robustness, reliability, and manufacturability4. Documentation, Tools & Production SupportPrepare and maintain comprehensive R&D documentation, including:Design specificationsTest protocolsValidation and verification reportsTrack tasks, issues, and defects using JiraMaintain technical knowledge and documentation in ConfluenceSupport New Product Introduction (NPI), pilot builds, and production activitiesCollaborate cross-functionally to resolve technical issues and implement continuous improvement processesQualificationsEducation & Professional ExperienceBachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Physics, or a related disciplineMinimum:5+ years of relevant experience (Bachelor's degree), or3+ years of relevant experience (Master's degree)Technical CompetenciesDemonstrated experience with FPGA and microcontroller (MCU) development and programmingStrong background in embedded hardware and firmware co-development, integration, and debuggingFamiliarity with common interfaces and peripherals, including:A/D convertersSPI, I2CFlash and DRAMStrong system-level troubleshooting and diagnostic skillsProficiency in, or ability to quickly learn:KiCad, AltiumGitLabJira, ConfluenceLabVIEWProven ability to capture, document, and reuse technical knowledge effectivelyCommunication & CollaborationStrong interpersonal and cross-functional collaboration skillsAbility to work effectively in multidisciplinary engineering teamsCapable of driving technical problem-solving and project executionAbility to read English technical documentation proficiently and communicate in spoken English at a working level with internal teams, suppliers, and external partnersPreferred QualificationsExperience in RF-related design, including:RF driversImpedance matchingEMI/EMC mitigationSignal integrity optimizationPrior experience in mass spectrometry or related instrumentation fieldsFamiliarity with full-system integration and debugging of mass spectrometry subsystems, such as:Quadrupole driversHigh-voltage power suppliesRF/DC driversIon source control systemsLow-noise detection and signal acquisition electronicsSalary: $80000 - $100000 per year
