Job SummaryThe Commercial Architecture Director is a licensed architect responsible for shaping the strategic vision, standards, and innovation for commercial project design across the organization. The role ensures all commercial initiatives align with design excellence, cost efficiency, technical specifications, and constructability best practices. Overseeing a high‑performing architectural team, the Director collaborates with project leaders and external partners to deliver consistent, scalable support for commercial projects across multiple markets.Primary ResponsibilitiesPartner with divisions to provide strategic leadership for all commercial projects, ensuring alignment with design intent, cost targets, and constructability goals.Lead, develop, and scale a team of architects, support staff, and outsource partners to support the commercial product needs of multiple divisions.Partner with land teams and developers to coordinate product designs with site planning and resolve conflicts in order to meet project requirements.Work with division operations to develop presentation materials for Planning Board presentations and represent architecture in planning meetings as needed.Lead and coordinate design initiatives, in conjunction with the design team, for new plans, elevations, and improvements to existing products.Represent commercial architecture when coordinating with division and third‑party consultants on projects having specialty requirements such as density studies, noise analysis, impervious surface limits, and energy qualifications.Evaluate plan/unit performance across divisions and identify opportunities for optimization, value engineering, and customer‑experience improvement.Direct resolution of architectural, structural, or cross‑functional plan issues involving multiple markets.Set the vision for standardization, innovation, and platform consistency across multiple markets.Other duties as assigned.Management ResponsibilitiesEnsure appropriate staffing to meet department needs.Utilize recruiting and selection tools/processes to build organizational talent.Delegate work according to employees’ abilities and skills.Evaluate employee performance and plan compensation actions in accordance with that performance.Provide developmental opportunities through internal and external training.Create opportunities for employee growth.Provide continuous coaching regarding functional and leadership standards (technical skills and behaviors).Scope and ImpactDecision impact: Area Department Responsibility – Single.Budgetary Responsibility: Yes.Direct Reports: Yes.Indirect Reports: Yes.Physical RequirementsNot applicable.Required Education & ExperienceBachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction or equivalent; Minimum 10 or more years of Architecture or Construction experience.Licensing & CertificationsLicensed architect; valid driver’s license.Required Skills & KnowledgeExtensive knowledge and work experience in commercial construction.Personnel management and team leadership expertise.Project management expertise.Consultant management expertise.Budgeting expertise.Building systems analysis and building science training.Understanding of material and labor cost as it applies to design and house cost.Construction document development expertise.Comprehensive knowledge of commercial construction techniques, building materials, building codes, structural elements, product installation methods, value engineering, and costing principles.Effective communication and organization skills.General understanding of ACAD (drafting experience preferred).Pay Information$160,000 – $175,000 annually.
