We believe who you are is just as important as what you do!As a Middle Market Underwriter, you'll help Central fulfill its promise to its customers by effectively managing your assigned territory, building strong relationships with agents, writing a profitable book of business, and providing top-notch service.Key Responsibilities of the RoleManage and underwrite assigned book of middle market business to achieve profitability and meet financial objectivesSelect profitable new business through analysis of the risks presented, coverage requested, and losses incurredClassify and price risks appropriately using underwriting judgement and analytical tools and resourcesHandle complex or larger accounts that may require reinsurance placementMonitor premium growth for assigned middle market territory, conducting profit and growth analysis by territory and agencyIdentify opportunities for book improvement and work with Distribution on implementing necessary changesLead reviews on larger accounts exceeding letter of authorityKeep current on state/territory issues and regulationsDevelop and maintain strong relationships with agents, traveling as needed for agency visitsCommunicate effectively, providing prompt and professional serviceDevelop and maintain strong internal relationships within the Underwriting Team and with other business units such as loss control, customer service, claims, and marketingProvide input and data to help drive and implement strategic underwriting initiativesMaintain appropriate underwriting file documentationDemonstrate a commitment to continuing education and developmentRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in relevant field and 2 years of experience in Commercial Lines UnderwritingOr 4 years of experience in Commercial Lines UnderwritingPreferred QualificationsExperience in underwriting Middle Market accountsKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesStrong knowledge of underwriting principles and guidelines to evaluate and manage highly complex accounts effectivelySolid time, organizational, and desk management skillsAbility to apply advanced underwriting concepts including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification and control, coverage implications, and loss analysisAbility to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutionsEffective verbal and written communication skills, including negotiation, presentation, and influence to achieve favorable outcomesKnowledge of commercial lines coverages and policies in assigned statesAbility to professionally interact with our customersAbility to investigate, gather facts and information, and analyze coverageUnderstand the importance of capturing dataAn innovative and continuous improvement mindsetA positive, professional, cooperative, and quality-conscious service attitudeAbility to work under pressure, deal with interpersonal conflict, and handle a heavy workloadPossess analytical and problem-solving skillsVerbal and written communication skills, including negotiation, presentation, and influence skillsAbility to understand Central Insurance's policies and processesAbility to travel to assigned agents including occasional overnightTotal RewardsCentral establishes base pay based on several factors including labor market data and an evaluation of candidate qualifications relative to role requirements.
