Job Description
The Food Handlers Certification Adjunct Instructor provides high‑quality instruction to adult learners seeking food safety training required for employment in food service settings. This position delivers curriculum aligned with state and local health department standards, prepares students for successful completion of an approved Food Handlers Certification exam, and ensures a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment.
Responsibilities
Deliver engaging, competency‑based instruction in food safety, sanitation, and safe food‑handling practices aligned with state and local regulations.
Prepare students for successful completion of an approved Food Handlers Certification exam.
Provide clear demonstrations of proper hygiene, cross‑contamination prevention, temperature control, cleaning and sanitizing procedures, and safe food storage.
Maintain accurate attendance, assessment, and certification records in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
Ensure a safe classroom and lab environment by enforcing safety protocols and proper equipment use.
Communicate effectively with students regarding course expectations, progress, and certification requirements.
Utilize instructional materials, demonstrations, and real‑world examples to support diverse learning styles.
Maintain current knowledge of food safety regulations, industry standards, and certification requirements.
Required Qualifications
Current, valid Food Handlers Certification or Food Protection Manager Certification (ServSafe, NRFSP, Prometric, or equivalent).
Demonstrated knowledge of food safety principles, sanitation standards, and regulatory requirements.
Prior experience working in food service, culinary operations, hospitality, or a related field.
Strong communication and presentation skills.
Ability to teach adult learners with varying levels of experience and education.
High school diploma or equivalent (Some institutions may require an associate degree or higher—adjust as needed).
Preferred Qualifications
Prior teaching or training experience, especially in workforce development or continuing education.
Experience delivering certification‑based instruction (e.g., ServSafe, Food Handler, Food Protection Manager).
Associate degree or higher in Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, Nutrition, or a related field.
Physical Demands
Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed under general supervision in an office or classroom setting with appropriate climate controls. Travel, early morning, evening, and weekend work may be required.
Essential functions: require lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.
Medium work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally; involves sitting only occasionally, walking and standing are required regularly, incumbents may be required to kneel, crouch/squat, crawl, climb, stoop, turn/twist, balance, reach, or handle.
Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability, and creative problem‑solving skills are important.
Salary Grade
Salary commensurate with education and experience in accordance with the college salary plan.
