The team owns core distributed services, cloud platforms, job scheduling and execution systems, and standardized storage interfaces — delivering reliable, scalable services that abstract away infrastructure complexity.Operating at the heart of the firm’s platform, this is a high-impact area: the systems you build directly shape the reliability, performance, and scalability of research and production workloads across the organization.You will partner closely with Infrastructure, Security, application engineering teams, and ML researchers to deliver foundational platform capabilities that improve reliability, performance, and productivity firm-wide — enabling engineers and researchers to focus on domain-specific innovation. This role operates at the platform services layer (not bare-metal infrastructure) and emphasizes distributed systems design, strong abstractions, and operational excellence.We look for engineers who are motivated by solving complex problems through strong fundamentals and thoughtful system design. Our team includes experienced engineers from leading technology companies and top academic programs, working closely with infrastructure specialists and machine learning researchers to build resilient, high-leverage systems that power the firm.ResponsibilitiesDesign and implement distributed scheduling and workflow systemsImprove job prioritization, resource allocation, and orchestration across hybrid environmentsBuild scalable, reliable platform services and storage abstractionsLead complex projects from design through production deliveryImprove system reliability, observability, and operational performanceProvide technical leadership and mentorship across the teamLead complex projects from start to finish, which includes gathering project requirements, translating them into a rational software design, reasoning effectively about supporting or dependent technologies, and communicating effectively with collaborators and teammatesProvide technical guidance to engineering and research staffMentor and grow individual contributors to continuously up-level the teamRequirementsComputer Science / Engineering degree, or equivalent experience5+ years of software engineering experienceProven track record of software design and implementation with focus on correctness, robustness, efficiency, and scaleExpertise in a modern programming language, such as Python, Go, Java or C++Hands-on experience developing in a Linux/UNIX environmentDesign and implementation of scalable services and APIs, highly-available systems, and/or large-scale data infrastructureExperience with data storage and management technologies (e.g. PostgreSQL, Artifactory, Ceph, Redis)Familiarity with job scheduling and orchestration technologies (e.g. Airflow, Slurm)Familiarity with cloud-based data storage, querying, and processing technologiesWork with large codebases and experience building modular, extensible, and maintainable softwareStrong communication skills and a proven ability to explain complex ideas with clarity and simplicity“Friends of Voleon” Candidate Referral ProgramIf you have a great candidate in mind for this role and would like to have the potential to earn $15,000 if your referred candidate is successfully hired and employed by The Voleon Group, please use this form to submit your referral.
