Tooling Designer
Position SummaryPOSITION SUMMARYDesigns fixtures and tools for industrial machinery and equipment required for production and test processes.Evaluates factors such as quality, accessibility, economy, mobility, and performance requirements to supportefficient production and reduce manufacturing costs.Essential Functions Designs mill, lathe, holding fixtures and tools for assembly, test, and production processes by evaluatingproduct specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders, and shop data. Confers with engineering, shop personnel, and senior designers to resolve tooling design problems related tomaterial characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost. Analyzes part drawing and manufacturing planning to assist in the design of adequate tooling and productionequipment. Draws preliminary sketches and prepares layouts and detailed drawings utilizing computer aided drawingsoftware for tools, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, and machine attachments. Selects standard items and materials (such as bushings and tool bits) to incorporate into tool design as well asoff‐the‐shelf components to assure cost effectiveness and optimum performance. Assists in the preparation ofestimates of production tooling for new and mature programs. May define or input parameters for specialized automated design (CAD) or automated production equipment(CNC) programs. Applies algebraic and geometric formulas and standard tool engineering data to create tool configuration.Applies understanding of ergonomics and tool use environment in determining the appropriate tool configuration. Recommends changes to refine and enhance products and processes by applying continuous improvement andlean manufacturing principles and techniques. Maintains tool design, manufacturing operations and technical knowledge by attending in‐house training oreducational workshops, and reviewing technical vendor/supplier manuals or related publications. Supports the team by accomplishing related results as needed. May provide guidance to others in productionor test areas. Work assignments may include cross‐functional or project team responsibilities.QualificationsEducation and ExperienceCompletion of related trade school program, AA, or equivalent external training. Demonstrated ability toperform the essential functions of the job typically acquired through five years of related experience indrafting and tool design.Knowledge, Skills And AbilitiesConsiderable knowledge and understanding of tool design industry practices, standards and techniques. Thoroughknowledge of design and drawing practices, tolerancing and use of computer‐aided design and basic engineeringanalysis tools. General knowledge of aerospace or similar industry products and manufacturing processes andmaterials. Ability to implement and effectively apply continuous improvement methods. Ability to use CADsoftware proficiently. Ability to use standard business applications software and specialized data analysis tools.May require the use of project management applications. Ability to take initiative on complex assignments and toresolve immediate production problems. May be required to determine methods and procedures on newassignments. Ability to read and interpret technical journals and reports. Ability to work with mathematicalconcepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solidgeometry and trigonometry; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions topractical situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Abilityto effectively demonstrate team member competencies and participate in goal‐setting, performance feedback,and self‐development activities.TYPICAL MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit.
