Database Platform Engineer
Location: New York City or Chicago (Hybrid)
A leading global investment firm is building a next-generation database platform designed to modernize how database infrastructure is provisioned, managed, and scaled.
This role sits within a Database Engineering group focused on building a Kubernetes-native Database-as-a-Service platform that replaces traditional manual administration with declarative provisioning, automated lifecycle management, and self-healing infrastructure .
The team is creating a standardized platform that enables engineering teams to deploy and manage databases through code-defined infrastructure, GitOps workflows, and fully automated operations across multiple database technologies.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of databases, Kubernetes, and platform engineering .
What You'll Do
Design and operate database workloads running on Kubernetes , including the development of operators and custom resources to automate provisioning and lifecycle management
Build and support high-availability database solutions across technologies such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Snowflake, ClickHouse, and Redis
Develop declarative infrastructure patterns for database deployment and schema management
Implement database schema management pipelines using tools such as Flyway, Liquibase, or Atlas
Build GitOps-driven workflows and CI/CD pipelines for database infrastructure and platform services
Develop observability and monitoring capabilities using Kubernetes-native tooling
Create migration tooling to transition workloads from traditional VM environments and managed cloud services into the platform
Design secure self-service capabilities that allow engineering teams to provision and manage databases safely within Kubernetes environments
What You Bring
Strong experience working with multiple database technologies , such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, Snowflake, ClickHouse, or Redis
Hands-on experience with Kubernetes , including concepts such as Pods, Deployments, StatefulSets, and Operators
Experience with infrastructure-as-code and declarative system management
Proficiency in Python or Go , along with experience building automation and platform tooling
Experience working with GitOps workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and modern platform engineering practices
Familiarity with monitoring, observability, and performance tuning in distributed systems
Nice to Have
Experience running stateful applications in production Kubernetes environments
Experience developing Kubernetes operators or working with database-specific operators
Knowledge of Snowflake administration, SQL Server automation, or schema migration tooling
Familiarity with data lakehouse technologies such as Apache Iceberg and query federation tools like Trino or Presto
Experience with analytical databases (ClickHouse) or distributed key-value stores (Redis)
Understanding of cloud-native security and authentication patterns within Kubernetes
What Makes This Role Unique
Opportunity to help build a modern database platform from the ground up
Work with cutting-edge cloud-native infrastructure and data technologies
Collaborate with engineers who are redefining how databases are operated at scale
High impact role within a technology-driven investment environment
If you're excited about transforming traditional database management into a scalable, automated platform , this is an opportunity to work on one of the most technically ambitious infrastructure initiatives in financial services.
