We are committed to teamwork and value motivation to get the job done.The Staff Accountant supports the financial operations of a highway and heavy civil construction company by performing day-to-day accounting functions, assisting with job cost accounting, and ensuring compliance with internal controls, GAAP, and applicable federal, state, and MnDOT requirements. This role works closely with project managers, payroll, and operations to provide accurate and timely financial information for construction projects.Key ResponsibilitiesGeneral AccountingPrepare and post journal entries, including accruals, depreciation, and monthly adjustmentsReconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, and credit card statementsAssist with month-end and year-end close processesMaintain accurate financial records in accordance with GAAPConstruction & Job Cost AccountingTrack and analyze job costs by project, cost code, and phaseReview job cost reports and investigate variances with project teamsAssist with Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and revenue recognitionSupport project forecasting and cost-to-complete reportingAccounts Payable & Receivable (Support Role)Process vendor invoices and ensure proper coding to jobs and cost codesAssist with subcontractor payments, lien waivers, and compliance documentationSupport customer billing, including progress billings and retainage trackingReconcile AR and follow up on outstanding balances as neededCompliance & ReportingAssist with sales/use tax reporting, including construction-related tax considerationsSupport audits, including financial, DOT, and workers' compensation auditsMaintain documentation to support compliance with MnDOT, federal, and state requirementsProcess Improvement & SupportAssist with internal control documentation and process improvementsSupport accounting system maintenance and reporting toolsPerform other accounting and administrative duties as assignedPosition RequirementsQualificationsEducation & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required1-3 years of accounting experience; construction or job cost accounting experience preferredExperience in highway, heavy civil, or union construction strongly preferredTechnical SkillsWorking knowledge of GAAPFamiliarity with construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint, Spectrum, Sage, or similar) preferredProficient in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and basic data analysisKnowledge & CompetenciesUnderstanding of job cost accounting and construction financial reportingAbility to manage multiple projects and deadlinesStrong attention to detail and accuracyEffective communication skills and ability to work cross-functionallyEqual Opportunity Employer
