Department Supervisor of Assessments Location Government Center Position Type FT Employee Salary Date 2026.01.12 Description Assessor Starting pay range: $23.7738 - $26.0898 per hour Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-4:30 pm Location: Bloomington, IL About the Role McLean County is seeking a detail-oriented and service-focused Assessor to support the fair and accurate valuation of taxable property throughout the County. This position plays a key role in maintaining property records, analyzing assessment data, supporting township assessors, and assisting the public with assessment-related questions. The Assessor also provides day-to-day team leadership to administrative support staff and contributes to special assessment projects and statutory processes. What You’ll Do Provide team leadership and guidance to administrative support staff to ensure timely and accurate assessment activities Perform technical analysis related to property valuation using deeds, field inspections, drawings, and assessment software Assist Township Assessors with data analysis, reporting, and maintaining master tax and assessment files Create and update property records, drawings, plats, and inspection documentation Respond to property assessment inquiries from residents and property owners by phone and in person Schedule, attend, and document Board of Review hearings, including posting agendas and minutes in compliance with the Open Meetings Act Review and approve Certificates of Error and submit for processing Receive, analyze, and maintain homestead and non-homestead exemption records Analyze property sales for use in sales ratio studies Assist with preferential assessments and special assessment projects Serve as backup FOIA officer for the department Perform other related duties as assigned What We’re Looking For Knowledge & Skills Knowledge of appraisal principles and property assessment practices Familiarity with land use controls and property development guidelines Understanding of local government operations and modern office practices Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar software Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing Ability to work effectively with staff, township assessors, County officials, and the public Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent One (1) to three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in areas such as appraisal, database management, building construction, drafting site plans, surveying, or a related field An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered Licenses & Certifications Valid Illinois Driver’s License Certified Illinois Assessing Officer (CIAO) designation (or ability to obtain, if required) Physical & Work Environment This position involves light physical work, including occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds. Duties require visual acuity, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively. Work is performed in a generally safe office environment.
