Software Development Engineer, Perception, Fauna
DescriptionWe are seeking a Software Development Engineer to build and scale the software systems that power perception and state estimation on our intelligent robots. In this role, you will design, implement, and maintain production-quality software that enables robots to understand their position and motion in real time, even in challenging and dynamic environments. You will own the full software lifecycle-from architecture and design through implementation, testing, and deployment-ensuring that perception systems are reliable, performant, and maintainable at scale. You will build robust infrastructure for sensor data processing, algorithm integration, and embedded deployment pipelines, while collaborating closely with applied scientists and hardware engineers to bring cutting-edge research into production. This is a deeply hands-on engineering role. You will write high-quality, well-tested code, design scalable systems, and drive operational excellence across the perception software stack. The ideal candidate has strong software engineering fundamentals, experience building real-time systems, and a passion for robotics.Key job responsibilitiesDesign and implement production software systems for real-time perception and state estimation on robotic platforms like SproutBuild scalable data pipelines for processing, calibrating, and managing multi-sensor data (cameras, IMUs, and other sensing modalities)Develop and maintain deployment infrastructure for embedded hardware (e.g., ARM, GPU-accelerated edge devices), including CI/CD pipelines, OTA updates, and monitoringArchitect software interfaces between perception, controls, and navigation subsystems within the robot's autonomy stackOptimize system performance under strict latency, memory, and power constraints through profiling, benchmarking, and iterative improvementBuild and maintain testing frameworks, simulation environments, and evaluation infrastructure for perception systemsDrive operational excellence including alarming, metrics, runbooks, and on-call support for production robotics systemsCollaborate with applied scientists to translate research prototypes into production-ready, maintainable codeBasic Qualifications3+ years of non-internship professional software development experienceBachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related fieldExperience programming with at least one software programming languageKnowledge of programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java or PerlExperience designing and building large-scale, production-quality software systemsStrong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented designExperience with version control (Git), code review processes, and CI/CD pipelinesFamiliarity with Linux/Unix development environmentsPreferred QualificationsExperience with real-time or embedded systems programming (C/C++ on ARM/GPU platforms)Experience with robotics middleware such as ROS/ROS2Familiarity with perception systems (SLAM, VIO, sensor fusion) or computer visionExperience with NVIDIA Jetson, Qualcomm RB5, or similar embedded AI platformsExperience building and maintaining deployment pipelines for edge/embedded devicesTrack record of shipping software to production on physical hardware at scaleExperience with performance profiling, optimization, and resource-constrained environmentsFamiliarity with ML model deployment and inference optimization on edge devicesExperience with infrastructure-as-code, containerization, or embedded LinuxStrong communication skills and history of cross-functional collaborationAmazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status. Our inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers.
