A candidate for this position will be a dedicated, solution-oriented individual with 10 or more years of experience in guiding the safe, effective implementation of ecological restoration efforts in California. The construction manager leads and manages our construction group. The construction group implements stream and wetland habitat restoration construction, streambank repairs, natural landscapes for private estates, pond construction and maintenance, wildland revegetation with temporary or permanent irrigation systems, plant establishment period maintenance, standard erosion control or biotechnical treatments, fire fuel and invasive species management, and similar projects. The construction group manager reports to the chief operating officer.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and managed the construction team
Develop team schedules that accommodate variables including diverse and competing project needs, staff availability and skills, and seasonal conditions. Ensure staff have the knowledge and training needed to perform work, and to advance as desired in their careers
Mentor construction crew staff in developing their skills and improving work performance.
Work with science, planning, and design teams to develop detailed plans and cost estimates for projects
Help find solutions to challenging restoration problems including remote sites, adverse soil and climate conditions, and plant establishment problems
Guide the construction team in project implementation, identifying construction task sequences, materials and equipment needs, permit requirements, and safety considerations
Develop strong positive relationships and maintain clear communications with clients and other project stakeholders
Develop and oversee the implementation of project safety protocols
Oversee project schedule and budget to deliver projects efficiently
Prepare and manage contracts and subcontracts
Inspect site conditions after implementation to review project performance and follow-up needs Minimum Qualifications
10+ years of increasingly responsible experience in implementing and managing ecological restoration or natural landscapes in varied settings
Leadership skills and experience
Excellent interpersonal skills, experience working with interdisciplinary teams, and strong written and verbal communication skills
Commitment to producing ecologically sound work
Knowledge of California native plants, and plant establishment needs
Knowledge of planting methods, erosion control measures, invasive species control methods, and irrigation approaches for open space settings
Experience in developing and managing large, complex budgets and schedules
Skilled in Microsoft Office including Word and Excel
Knowledge of, commitment to, and ability to train others in construction site safety protocols
California Class C driver's license with a clean driving record
Willingness to travel throughout central and northern California
Ability to read and understand construction plans, planting plans, and specifications
Desired Skills
The ideal candidate will also have some or all of the following:
Qualification as a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Practitioner or Developer and/or Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control
Ability to converse in Spanish
Knowledge of equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair needs
Ability to travel within California for up to 3 days at a time
Ability to hike and drive safely and comfortably in remote, rugged settings
Understanding of earth-moving equipment efficiency, capabilities, and safety requirements
Training or experience in construction site safety, especially heavy equipment and trench safety
Class A or B California driver's license
College degree or post-secondary education
Familiarity with project management software and programs, Gantt charts, Microsoft Office, PDF/Bluebeam readers; ISNetworld, KPA Enterprise, Deltek Ajera
