We are looking to add more adventurous souls to our team!Job SummaryThe PFS Telecommunications Engineer will test, install, troubleshoot, and maintain various telecommunication technologies at multiple sites in Mountain View, California in support of the Taara project. The Taara project work is based out of X, the moonshot factory, an Alphabet/Google company exploring innovative solutions to complex global problems. Taara is a Free Space Optical Communications (FSOC) Research & Development (R&D) project at X and this position will be part of a team involved in designing, testing, and deploying aspects of this high-speed wireless backhaul technology. Taara uses beams of light to deliver high-speed, high-capacity connectivity over long distances. In the same way traditional fiber uses light to carry data through cables in the ground, Taara uses light to transmit information as very narrow, invisible beams. This beam is sent between two small Taara terminals to create a link.Occasional domestic and international travel may be required up to 15% of the time, in up to 1-2-week increments. The Engineer will be based at X's RLS1 facility in Mountain View, CA working alongside X program team members on the Taara project, and will report to the PFS IT&C Manager in Denver, CO. The ideal candidate must be a good communicator, active problem solver, comfortable with logistical and technical challenges, and enjoy working in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment.Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesPerform site surveys and site analysis to determine suitability for deployment of wireless optical communication technologies.Write process instructions and train technicians to follow process steps. May involve the creation of filmed training modules and organizing training assets on a digital distribution platform.Develop, test, and qualify deployment hardware. Includes frequent access to the RLS1 roof (X facility).Provide wireless optical communication hardware set-up demonstrations for potential clients and other visiting groups.Debug wireless optical communication technologies with local and remote engineering teams. Track changes and update logs/documentation as appropriate.Manage logistics to ensure wireless optical communication hardware is safely transported to installation sites.Coordinate and document setup, installation & operation of the wireless optical communication technology from end to end. To include preparing and swapping hardware terminals for bringdown/bring up scripts, linking the deployment, verifying performance and enabling Internet Portal Gateway (IPG).Document and recommend design changes to wireless optical communication hardware and/or software to support design developments.Specify design requirements and process/manufacturing requirements for new hardware or software as requested.Develop and optimize the wireless optical communication deployment process, line layout, fixtures, and hardware.May work with Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs), Contract Manufacturers (CMs) & suppliers to prioritize and solve manufacturing and design related issues to the wireless optical communication hardware and/or associated software.Attend Taara meetings as requested/appropriate. May include Taara team syncs, Network Operation Center (NOC) syncs, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) meetings, and client/vendor calls as requested.Maintain good-housekeeping practices for the Taara deployment area at RLS1, including hardware and tool packages used on deployments.QualificationsAA/AS degree in an engineering or telecommunications field 5+ years of IT and Telecommunications work experience Experience with international travel and deployment logistics Demonstrated mechanical skills installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting telecommunications and electronic equipmentExperience with point-to-point wireless communication systems and manufacturingExperience installing and maintaining RF (Radio Frequency) communication equipment, switches, and cablingFamiliarity with Google Suite and Microsoft OfficeWillingness to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidaysAuthorization to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment.
