By combining deep learning with formal logic and physics-based modeling, we create verifiable, interpretable AI systems that collaborate with and support human researchers in high-stakes scientific and engineering workflows.Our mission, 30×30, is to deliver a 30× improvement in the speed, accessibility, and cost of semiconductor and photonic hardware development by 2030.We aim to revolutionize hardware design and simulation in these industries and are building a team of highly motivated professionals to bring these innovations from research into commercial products.Position overview:As an AI Research Scientist focused on photonic and neuromorphic computing, you will play a key role in designing AI algorithms and architectures, as well as simulation and optimization frameworks for emerging, non-traditional computing platforms. You will contribute to the development of algorithms, digital twins, and training methods that bridge AI, physics, and hardware-aware system design integrated within Axiomatic's next-generation agentic-AI-aware computational science tools.This role is part of Axiomatic's long-term research and product roadmap and spans multiple projects and initiatives, working closely with AI researchers, physicists, and software engineers to translate advanced concepts into scalable, high-impact solutions.Your missionSimulation and digital twins: Develop simulation and digital-twin tools that capture physical effects such as nonlinearities, noise, and precision limits, enabling hardware-aware algorithm development.Co-design and collaboration: Work closely with internal AI, software, and hardware teams to ensure tight alignment between algorithms, system constraints, and long-term platform goals such as automation of scientific workflows.Algorithm and system design: Design and prototype machine-learning architectures and physics-aware optimization workflows for neuromorphic systems, exploring how AI models can be efficiently mapped onto emerging hardware substrates.Research, benchmarking, and reporting: Evaluate system-level performance tradeoffs, conduct benchmarking studies, document results, and contribute to technical decision-making across Axiomatic's R&D portfolio.Key requirementsPhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.Strong background in machine learning and neural-network architectures, with experience or strong interest in hardware-algorithm co-design, neuromorphic systems, or analog/unconventional computing.Expert-level proficiency in Python and modern ML frameworks.Solid understanding of scientific computing, modeling, and data-driven experimentation.Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced research environment.Nice to haveBackground in photonic, analog, or non-CMOS computing systems.Experience with spiking neural networks, energy-efficient AI, or hardware-aware ML.Familiarity with physical simulation tools or custom modeling pipelines.Contributions to open-source or research software projects.What we offer:Competitive compensationStock Options Plan: Empowering you to share in our success and growth.Cutting-Edge Tools: Access to state-of-the-art tools and collaborative opportunities with leading experts in artificial intelligence, physics, hardware and electronic design automation.Professional Growth: Opportunities to attend industry conferences, present research findings, and engage with the global AI research community.Impact-Driven Culture: Join a passionate team focused on solving some of the most challenging problems at the intersection of AI and hardware.Team work model:Open to remote within the USPrimary location:Boston, USWhy join us?At Axiomatic_AI, you will be working on technology that drives innovation in AI for scientific and engineering applications in line with our 30 x 30 mission.
