Structural Project Engineer

2–5 Years Experience | Austin, Texas | Full-Time | HybridInteresting Projects. Real Responsibility. Direct Mentorship.FORT Structures is an Austin-based structural engineering firm working on design-forward commercial and residential projects throughout Texas. Our work includes commercial office, multifamily, hospitality, adaptive reuse, mass timber, mixed-use, high-end residential, and emerging construction technologies. We design across steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and mass timber and use Revit/BIM to produce clear, coordinated, construction-ready structural documents. We are a small, dedicated team that likes solving hard problems. At FORT, you won't be buried inside a large production team or limited to one narrow part of a project. Our engineers work directly with our Principals, architects, contractors, and clients from early design through construction. Our goal is simple: make architecture buildable without losing design intent. Why FORTDirect Principal MentorshipYou'll work directly with experienced FORT Principals and senior engineers on structural systems, calculations, detailing, constructability, coordination, and project strategy. We want engineers to understand why a structural solution works—not simply how to run the calculation.Small Team. Real Responsibility.Because we're intentionally a small firm, engineers get meaningful project responsibility early. You'll participate in schematic design, engineering, BIM coordination, detailing, client coordination, and construction administration rather than working on one isolated portion of a project. As your experience grows, so will your responsibility for projects, clients, and younger staff.Hybrid + Collaborative Work EnvironmentFORT offers a flexible hybrid work environment centered around our collaborative East Austin office. We value the flexibility and focus that comes from remote work, but we also believe some of the best engineering happens sitting together, sketching through problems, reviewing models, and learning from one another. Our office is designed to make that easy. Engineers, BIM staff, Project Managers, and Principals work closely together rather than in separate silos.Interesting ProblemsWe deliberately pursue projects that require thought. That may mean unusual geometry, adaptive reuse, mixed structural systems, demanding architecture, existing buildings, emerging technologies, or simply finding a cleaner and more efficient way to make something work.If you enjoy figuring things out, you'll have plenty to work on here. What You'll DoPerform structural analysis and design for building projectsDesign structures using steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and mass timberDevelop framing and lateral systems during schematic designIdentify difficult structural issues early and develop practical solutionsPrepare clear, organized, reviewable structural calculationsWork directly with our BIM team to develop coordinated Revit models and construction documentsDevelop custom structural detailsCoordinate directly with architects, contractors, and other consultantsReview shop drawings, submittals, and RFIsParticipate in site visits and construction administrationTake increasing ownership of project coordination, schedules, clients, and budgets as your experience growsWhat We're Looking For2–8 years of structural engineering experience focused primarily on building designBachelor's or Master's degree in Architectural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related fieldEIT/FE preferred; PE license strongly valued for more experienced candidatesCommercial and/or residential building design experienceExperience designing structures in multiple materialsStrong structural fundamentals and sound engineering judgmentExperience with structural engineering software such as RISA, RAM, RAM Concept, Enercalc, and ExcelComfortable working in a Revit/BIM-based environmentGood communication and organizational skillsAbility to take ownership, follow through, and manage multiple prioritiesMost importantly, we're looking for someone who:Likes solving difficult problemsWants to become a better structural engineerTakes ownership of their workWorks well with architects, builders, and other engineersValues direct feedback and mentorshipPays attention to details without losing sight of the big pictureThe ProjectsOur engineers work across a broad range of project types and structural systems, including:Commercial office and mixed-use buildingsMultifamily developmentsHospitality and restaurant projectsAdaptive reuse and historic structuresMass timberConcrete and post-tensioned concreteStructural steelWood and masonry constructionHigh-end custom residentialModular and prefabricated construction3D-printed concreteArchitecturally complex specialty structuresGrowth at FORTThis role can flex significantly based on experience.A developing engineer may initially work closely with Project Managers and Principals while steadily taking ownership of larger portions of projects.A more experienced engineer may lead smaller projects, coordinate directly with clients, mentor younger engineers, and begin moving toward Project Manager responsibilities. We want people who are interested in building a career at FORT and taking on more responsibility as the firm grows.Compensation + BenefitsSalary: $75,000–$105,000, depending on experience, technical capabilities, and professional licensure.FORT's benefits include:Employer medical insurance premiumEmployer HSA contributionDental and vision coverage available401(k) with employer matchEmployer-paid life insuranceEmployer-paid short-term and long-term disability3 weeks paid vacation5 paid sick daysPaid company holidaysCompany-paid winter break from Christmas Eve through January 2Weekly office lunchContinuing education supportCompany events and team activitiesJoin FORTWe're looking for engineers who care about good design, enjoy solving difficult problems, and want to work closely with people who take their craft seriously. If you're looking for interesting projects, direct mentorship, meaningful responsibility, hybrid flexibility, and room to grow, we'd like to hear from you. Please send your resume along with a brief note describing your experience, the types of projects you enjoy working on, and why FORT interests you.
