The office is committed to fostering equity and fairness in the criminal justice system. Role Description This is a full-time, on-site role located in Athens, GA. The Assistant Public Defender will be responsible for representing indigent clients in criminal cases - charged with both misdemeanor and felony offense. Duties include preparing and presenting legal defenses, representing clients in court proceedings such as preliminary hearings, bond hearings, pre-trial motions, and trials, conducting legal research including appellate briefs and memorandym, drafting motions and other legal documents, and providing legal counsel. The role requires regular court appearances, client interviews, and collaboration with other legal professionals to ensure the fair treatment of clients. Qualifications Proficiency in Law and familiarity with legal principles and practicesExperience in Criminal Law and Criminal Defense, including representing clients in courtroomsUnderstanding of Courts and judicial proceduresSkills in providing Legal Assistance and guidance with a client-focused approachAbility to conduct in-depth legal research and draft documents effectivelyStrong oral and written communication skillsJuris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and admission to the State Bar of GeorgiaCommitment to public service and ensuring equity in the criminal justice system
