Job Description Operations Specialist – Heavy Haul / Overdimensional Freight (Brokerage)Location: Spring, TX (Greater Houston Market)Department: Operations / BrokerageReports To: Operations Manager / Director of OperationsPosition SummaryThe Operations Specialist is responsible for the end-to-end execution of overdimensional (OD) and heavy-haul shipments within a freight brokerage environment. This role requires deep expertise in permitting, routing, carrier sourcing, and compliance for oversized freight across multiple states. The ideal candidate thrives in high-touch, high-complexity logistics operations and has an established network of specialized carriers.Key ResponsibilitiesOperational ExecutionCoordinate cradle-to-grave movement of oversized / overweight (OD/OW) freight shipmentsBuild and execute detailed load plans including route surveys, axle configurations, and transit timingSecure qualified heavy-haul carriers (RGN, multi-axle, dual-lane, etc.)Negotiate rates with carriers and ensure margin compliancePermitting & ComplianceManage multi-state permitting processes, including:Oversize/overweight permitsEscorts / pilot carsRoute restrictions and curfewsCoordinate with third-party permit agencies when neededCustomer & Carrier ManagementServe as primary point of contact for customers on specialized shipmentsProvide proactive communication on milestones, delays, and risk mitigationBuild and maintain a vetted network of heavy-haul carriers and vendorsProblem Solving & Risk MitigationAnticipate route challenges (bridge laws, construction, weather)Resolve service disruptions quickly (breakdowns, re-permitting, re-routing)Maintain high service levels on high-value, high-visibility freightSystems & DocumentationUtilize TMS systems for load tracking, documentation, and billingEnsure accurate entry of accessorials (permits, escorts, tolls, etc.)Maintain detailed shipment records for audit and complianceRequired Qualifications3+ years of freight brokerage experience specifically in heavy haul / OD freightStrong understanding of:Permitting processes across multiple statesAxle weight distribution and equipment typesEscort requirements and route planningExperience with TMS platforms and load tracking systemsStrong negotiation and problem-solving skillsPreferred QualificationsExperience with project cargo, energy, construction, or industrial freightFamiliarity with route survey tools and permitting softwareExisting book of specialized carriers or customersKey CompetenciesHigh attention to detail (critical for compliance-heavy freight)Sense of urgency and ownershipStrong communication and stakeholder managementAbility to manage multiple complex shipments simultaneously
