Life Skills Caseworker
DescriptionCenter for Hope and Safety, located in Bergen County NJ, is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting victims of domestic violence and their children. We believe every person has the right to be safe, empowered and free from violence.In this role, you will work with clients one-on-one teaching and assisting them in the areas of independent living and self-sufficiency, including budgeting, financial planning, shopping, meal planning, house cleaning, personal organization, etc. The schedule for this position is Tuesday-Saturday, three (3) days from 10am-6pm and two (2) days from 12pm-8pm.ResponsibilitiesMeet with residents weekly at their apartment (or Shelter when necessary) or an assigned or approved location in the community as needed.Assist clients in planning, communal living, weekly chore list which includes cleaning, organization, recycling, etc. and conduct monthly house meetings.Transport clients and/or teach transportation skills to enable clients to have access to appointments, job training, employment, etc.Assist clients through personal crises as well as crises in their homes. Support women on personal growth issues, parenting skills and behavior management of their children. If time permits, run groups on related topics, as necessary. Support children to build self-esteem and encourage appropriate discharge of anger and expression of feelings. Perform advocacy work as needed, i.e.: legal, police, medical, etc. Advocacy should be done in correlation with the prescribed goal plan. Encourage women to sign up for services available in the community, such as Housing Authority, Emergency Welfare, etc. May include accompanying clients to court, welfare, apartment searches, etc.RequirementsBachelor’s degree requiredOne (1) year Social work or teaching experience with women and/or families requiredTeaching and/or training in the areas of daily living skills and adult education preferredBilingual Spanish a mustValid Driver’s License and car necessary for required field visitsStrong organizational and communication skills requiredAbility to work afternoon and evening hours around the program’s schedule and client needs requiredAvailability to work Tuesday to Saturday with two evening shifts.We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
