Welding Contractor

Position Description: Dominion Engineering, Inc. (DEI) designs and manufactures custom tooling, instrumentation, and control systems for customers in the nuclear power and related industries. We are seeking an experienced freelance welder to support occasional, specialty welding and fabrication projects at our Reston, Virginia facility. This is not a full‑time or part‑time employee position. Work will be performed on an as‑needed basis, with scheduling coordinated in advance for specific projects. Schedule will be 1-10 hours per week, as needed. About This Engagement DEI periodically requires specialty welding support across a range of projects at our Reston facility. We expect to call on the selected contractor on a recurring basis over the course of the engagement, which may include requests outside of normal business hours. While individual projects will be short in duration and scheduled in advance, this is an ongoing contractor relationship rather than a single isolated engagement. There is no guaranteed minimum number of hours per week, but DEI anticipates returning to this contractor regularly over time. The selected contractor will be required to execute a general services agreement with Dominion Engineering, Inc. prior to performing any work. Individual project scope and compensation will be authorized separately via Company purchase order. Primary point of contact: Laboratory Manager, Applied Solutions and Innovation. Essential Functions: The contractor will perform specialty welding and fabrication tasks on a project-by-project basis. Set up welding machines and operate safely to create or rework parts and assemblies. 2. Follow all health and safety requirements while on site at Dominion premises. 3. Keep workstation(s) clean and organized. 4. Assist in basic maintenance of welding equipment as needed. 5. Assemble parts into final assemblies, as needed. 6. Interpret drawings, specifications, and welding requirements provided for each project. 7. Execute high-quality welds in accordance with applicable safety and workmanship standards. 8. Collaborate with on-site DEI staff to complete projects efficiently and safely. 9. Must provide own welding tools and equipment, unless otherwise arranged for a specific project. 10. Comply with all safety requirements while on site. Typical Welding Needs May Include: 1. Structural or specialty fabrication. 2. Repair or modification of metal components. 3. Short‑duration, task‑specific welding projects (not production work). Required Skills: 1. Demonstrated experience with MIG / Pulsed MIG Welding. 2. Demonstrated experience with TIG Welding. 3. Demonstrated experience with cutting/grinding with hand and power tools. 4. Ability to read and interpret 2D engineering drawings. 5. Experience working with 304/304L and 316/316L Stainless Steel. 6. Experience using basic hand tools, including but not limited to wrenches, sockets, and ratchets. 7. AWS D1.6 Welding Certification, or willingness to obtain prior to commencement of work. 8. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 9. Reliable availability for occasional on-site projects at Dominion HQ in Reston, VA. Remote work not available. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this engagement, the contractor is regularly required to use fine motor skills with good hand-eye coordination. The contractor is regularly required to handle welding equipment, tooling, and materials, and may be required to stand for extended periods of time. The contractor must be able to work in an indoor laboratory/fabrication environment, wearing appropriate PPE including welding helmets, gloves, and protective clothing. The contractor must be able to lift or move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus to inspect weld quality. Required Education, Experience, Certification and Licenses: 1. Minimum 1–5 years of professional welding experience. 2. High school diploma or GED required; trade or vocational school degree is a plus. 3. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and safety documentation. Desired Skills: 1. Experience with 2D CNC laser cutting. 2. Experience with laser welding. 3. Experience with plasma cutting with a hand-operated torch. 4. Experience working with Inconel and/or Titanium. 5. Experience with cobots and/or robotic welding. 6. Knowledge of or experience with AWS D9.1 (Sheet Metal Welding). 7. Knowledge of or experience with AWS D18.1 (Welding of Austenitic Stainless-Steel Tubing). 8. Knowledge of or experience with AWS D17.1 (Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications). 9. Knowledge of or experience with ASME Section IX / AWS B2.1 (Welding and Brazing Qualifications). Contractor Requirements: 1. Operates as an independent business or sole proprietor. 2. Able to work under a 1099 independent contractor arrangement. 3. Responsible for own taxes, insurance, and business expenses. 4. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States 5. Must execute an independent contractor agreement prior to performing any work.
