Packaging Process Engineer I

The Packaging Process Engineer I researches, shows, and pilots innovative technologies and methodologies to improve packaging designs and processes. This person works with new product development activities and ensures process readiness for new product launches in support of Memphis packaging operations. Proposes solutions and opportunities to leadership for review. Crafts packaging components and develops packaging systems for existing products and/or product lines in compliance with industry and Smith + Nephew standards.

What will you be doing?
Conducts validation, process documentation, and process problem solving.
Perform packaging and equipment testing, resolving process problems, and implementing process improvement and error prevention projects.
Aids with the coordination of capital projects, process improvements, packaging improvements, flow improvement, process standardization, regulatory compliance, and cost reduction initiatives with multi-functional teams from Manufacturing, Quality, Packaging Engineering, Facilities, Finance, Marketing and outside suppliers and equipment manufacturers.
Coordinates and supervises packaging projects and programs from start through implementation. Establishes right project schedules and prepares project reports periodically to outline progress. Works under guidance from senior engineers with significant opportunity for individual action.
Responsible for ensuring that packaging for assigned product lines meet user needs, address CTQ requirements, are efficient, and promote the desired company quality and messaging.
Writes and performs IQ’s, OQ’s, PQ’s and Design Specifications. Performs tests on new packages as needed. Maintains complete records of packaging process and equipment design activities, test data, and other pertinent information for each project.
Communicates with Marketing and Product Development to coordinate packaging and labeling requirements for products to support new product introductions or packaging system changes.
Develops material specifications for package components and raw materials, and prepares process specifications for right processes, including protocol development and related testing.
Responsible for packaging development of legacy products when devices are not consistent or compatible with current packaging applications or standards. Maintains complete records for package related activities, including test data, and enters information into PLM system in compliance with design control processes and procedures.
Aids in the resolution of packaging-related problems with packaging suppliers and within production. Visit production environment regularly to understand and address current issues.
Participates in packaging complaint investigation and completes root cause analysis. Supplies recommendations and direction based on data and medical device packaging knowledge.
Develops effective working network with outside vendors and manufacturers to use their resources in implementing packaging initiatives.
What will you need to be successful?
Bachelor’s degree in Packaging/Science or a related technical area.
Packaging internship in related industry preferred.
Experience using CAD systems preferred.
Knowledge of ISO 11607/16775 preferred.
Regulated industry experience a plus.
Project and time management, able to work independently and within multi-functional teams.
Good communication skills.
Ability to lift 30 lbs.
