Engineer 3 – AMI 2.0 / Advanced Metering InfrastructureLocation: 14799 Chestnut Street, Westminster, CA 92683Work Arrangement: Hybrid – Tuesday & Thursday onsiteDuration: 18 monthsPay Rate: $40–$48/hr on W2Job SummaryWe are seeking an experienced Engineer 3 to support the validation, testing, and deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) 2.0 metering solutions. The Engineer will work closely with internal engineering, metering, operations, IT, field teams, and external technology vendors to evaluate metering hardware and applications, ensure technical feasibility and interoperability, and support successful field deployment.The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of engineering experience, preferably within metering systems, smart grid technologies, utility operations, or related areas, along with strong analytical, troubleshooting, testing, and communication skills.Key ResponsibilitiesAMI 2.0 Technical & Vendor SupportSupport the technical validation and evaluation of AMI 2.0 metering hardware, functionality, and related technologies.Collaborate with metering vendors on solution development, testing, troubleshooting, and enhancements.Review technical specifications and assess metering solutions for functionality, compatibility, and interoperability.Provide technical support during AMI 2.0 deployment activities and resolve issues in coordination with vendors and internal teams.Testing & EvaluationConduct functionality, hardware, and specification testing of qualified metering solutions.Support laboratory testing and integration testing of metering systems.Evaluate interoperability between AMI 2.0 technologies and grid management applications.Troubleshoot customer applications, field tools, and metering-related technical issues.Document test results, defects, findings, and recommendations.Field Readiness & DeploymentSupport AMI 2.0 field-test pilots focused on foundational use cases.Assist with deployment readiness activities and coordination across engineering, operations, IT, vendors, and field teams.Develop procedures, technical documentation, job aids, and instructions for Field Technicians and Meter Operations personnel.Support change management activities during pre-deployment and implementation.Assist with field troubleshooting and provide technical guidance to technicians and operational stakeholders.Engineering & Cross-Functional CollaborationApply engineering principles, standards, procedures, and analytical methods to complex technical assignments.Analyze technical problems and develop practical solutions, including adapting standard approaches when necessary.Work effectively with cross-functional teams to identify requirements, risks, dependencies, and technical issues.Communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.5+ years of experience in metering systems, smart grid technologies, utility engineering, or related engineering environments.Strong understanding of AMI systems, smart metering technologies, interoperability standards, and testing methodologies.Experience working in laboratory/testing environments.Experience with system, hardware, functionality, or integration testing.Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Ability to work effectively with internal stakeholders, field personnel, and external vendors.Ability to develop technical documentation, procedures, and job aids.Preferred QualificationsExperience within electric utility operations or metering organizations.Experience supporting field deployments, pilots, or technician operations.Knowledge of wireless communication protocols used in smart metering or AMI environments.Understanding of IT integration and grid management applications.Experience with vendor coordination and technology implementation.Familiarity with smart grid interoperability and communication standards.Experience supporting change management and deployment readiness activities.Ideal Candidate ProfileThe successful candidate will be an experienced engineer who can independently handle complex technical assignments, troubleshoot difficult problems, work with vendors and cross-functional teams, and translate technical requirements into practical testing, deployment, and field-support activities. Experience with AMI 2.0, smart meters, utility metering, or smart grid technologies is highly preferred.
