EMI/EMC Analysis, Design, and Test Engineer - Space Exploration Avionics Systems
MRI Technologies has an exciting opportunity for an EMI/EMC Analysis, Design, and Test Engineer on the JETS II contract at NASA Johnson Space Center. In this role, you will plan, execute, and analyze EMI/EMC tests on spaceflight avionics hardware, ensuring compliance with rigorous NASA and military standards for human-rated deep space exploration systems. You will be embedded with a multidisciplinary team of avionics, power, RF, and mechanical engineers supporting NASA's most ambitious exploration missions.A typical day involves reviewing circuit schematics and PCB layouts for EMI mitigation opportunities, coordinating test setups in the EMI chamber using spectrum analyzers and RF amplifiers, and collaborating with NASA civil servants to refine test plans and procedures. In the morning you may be analyzing radiated emissions data against MIL-STD-461 limits or preparing a test report for a recent hardware evaluation; in the afternoon you could be participating in a design review, working with mechanical teams on shielding and bonding strategies, or presenting compliance findings to the project team. The work is hands-on, technically rigorous, and directly tied to the safety and success of NASA's crewed deep space exploration program. What We Are Looking ForRequirements:Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Physics from an accredited institution, with 5-15 years of related experienceCoursework in electromagnetic (EM) fields and/or electronic designExperience planning, executing, and analyzing EMI/EMC tests on electronic hardware at laboratory and external facilitiesExperience contributing to test plans, procedures, and test reports per customer requirementsKnowledge of and ability to apply industry and NASA EMI/EMC standards, including MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464Ability to support design reviews, risk assessments, and system integration activities across avionics, power, RF, and mechanical disciplinesExcellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environmentProficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, OneNote, Outlook)Preferences:Master of Science or PhD degree in Engineering or Physics from an accredited institutionExperience with space, military, or commercial EMI/EMC design, test planning, execution, and mitigationSound knowledge of EMI/EMC compliance design and testing per MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464 for electrical/electronic systemsHands-on experience with EMI/EMC laboratory test equipment including spectrum analyzers, RF amplifiers, signal generators, EMI receivers, antennas, directional couplers, and power metersUnderstanding of RF design, circuit theory, and electromagnetic principles including component and cable shielding, filters, magnetics, microwaves, and antennasUnderstanding of key EMC problem areas including radiated emissions, electrostatic discharge (ESD), susceptibility to RF fields, power disturbances, and internal crosstalkExperience reviewing schematics, PCB layouts, and mechanical designs for electromagnetic design mitigationExperience with Satellite Space Systems or Spacecraft Vehicle design and testExperience with filtering, bonding, grounding, and shielding methods for EMI/EMC performance and complianceExperience with analysis tools such as SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, Mathcad, LabVIEW, and other EMI/EMC simulation and analysis toolsExperience generating EMI/EMC Control and Verification PlansPrevious experience with NASA spaceflight project developmentExperience in MIL-STD analysis of EMI testing results of radiated and conducted emissions and susceptibilityExperience in charging analysis of corona effects and plasma effects, including lightning protection and bonding and grounding techniquesCertification as an iNARTE EMC/EMI engineer or similar credentialThis position has been posted at multiple levels.
