Location: Baltimore, MD (onsite days required)
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Database Management Specialist to design, administer, optimize, and support complex enterprise database environments supporting large-scale, mission-critical systems. This role requires deep hands-on expertise with PostgreSQL and MongoDB in cloud-hosted environments, strong operational discipline, and the ability to support production systems with high availability, security, and performance requirements.
This is a senior-level role in scope and responsibility, though the title has been intentionally kept streamlined.
What You’ll Do
Design, develop, administer, and maintain complex enterprise databases, data lakes, and data warehouses
Architect database schemas, data models, security structures, and replication strategies
Administer PostgreSQL and MongoDB databases, including installation, upgrades, patching, backup/recovery, replication, and disaster recovery
Perform database performance monitoring, tuning, troubleshooting, and capacity planning in production and lower environments
Support large-scale data migrations across on‐prem and cloud environments (AWS)
Design and support ETL processes and complex data extractions
Develop and optimize complex SQL and NoSQL queries, indices, and batch jobs
Monitor production database activity (CPU, memory, disk, space utilization) and implement operational improvements
Implement and support high-availability database architectures
Apply database security hardening practices, including access controls, encryption, OS-level configurations, and compliance remediation
Support application deployments, CI/CD pipelines, and batch sequencing activities
Collaborate closely with developers, infrastructure teams, system operations, and business stakeholders
Participate in testing efforts including unit, integration, load, validation, and UAT testing
Adhere to security, change control, and project management policies
Provide on-call or after-hours support as required (evenings, weekends, holidays)
Required Experience & Qualifications (Non‐Negotiable)
Candidates must meet all minimum requirements below to be considered:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or a related field
(Degree copy required — transcripts alone are not sufficient)
6+ years of experience designing and supporting enterprise-scale databases
4+ years of hands-on experience with:
PostgreSQL database administration (production environments)
MongoDB
Complex SQL development, stored procedures, and performance tuning
4+ years of experience building complex data extractions, queries, or databases using PostgreSQL, Informatica, and MongoDB
4+ years of experience supporting applications in AWS cloud environments (EC2, AMIs, CI/CD)
4+ years of experience monitoring production databases and batch operations
4+ years of hands-on database maintenance experience (production and lower environments)
2+ years of experience supporting large-volume database migrations
Experience with high-availability database environments
Strong understanding of database architecture, normalization, indexing, partitioning, and replication
Experience with ETL processes and data warehousing concepts
Experience with CI/CD and development tools such as Jenkins, Bamboo, Maven, Git, Bitbucket, Jira, etc.
Experience working in structured, regulated environments with formal change controlPreferred Experience (Highly Desired)
Experience supporting state or federal health systems, marketplaces, or large human services platforms
Experience with EDI transactions (834, 820, 999, 270/271)
Experience supporting health insurance exchange (HIX) systems
Strong understanding of data governance, data quality controls, and metadata management
Experience with disaster recovery planning and validation
Experience optimizing large databases for performance and scalability
Familiarity with analytics and reporting tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Qlik)
Experience working closely with PMOs and enterprise stakeholders

Location & Relocation Expectations
This is a hybrid role requiring regular onsite presence in Baltimore, MD and availability for on-call support.
Relocation assistance is not provided. Candidates must already reside within reasonable commuting distance or be willing and able to relocate at their own expense prior to the start date.
Priority consideration will be given to candidates who are local or can relocate without restrictions or delays.
