VA BHS is a leader in delivering patient-centered care and encompasses a tertiary care hospital with academic affiliations, including Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine. The Deputy Director position is approximately 60% administrative and 40% clinical.Key responsibilities include:Leading performance improvement initiativesRecruitment & hiring of primary care providersContributing to the continuing education of providersManaging a float pool of providersOverseeing the peer review process for the service lineCovering Service Chief duties in their absenceInteracting with patient advocates to address quality of care issuesRepresenting the Primary Care service on numerous committees and workgroupsCarrying a partial patient panel in Primary CareOpportunities for medical students and Internal Medicine residents' educationCandidates with interests in team-based care, patient-centered care, population health, and/or clinical informatics are encouraged to apply. The clinical practice could be in one of several different clinical locations. The clinical practice location will depend on the interests and experience of the candidate, as well as the needs of the service. Options include one of the two academic practices with resident continuity clinics or one of our general primary care clinics.VA Primary Care Physicians manage a complex panel of patients in collaborative teams providing care to adult men and women. The VA utilizes a national electronic medical record and is known for delivering high-quality, evidence-based care within a culture of continuous improvement. Panel sizes are approximately 1,250 patients per full-time physician, and appointment lengths are 60 minutes for new patients and 30 minutes for all other appointments. Telephone and video care are supported. Each physician is part of a Patient Aligned Care Team that includes a provider, a registered nurse, a clinical associate, and a scheduler. Larger practices have integrated behavioral health providers, clinical pharmacists, dieticians, and social workers.There is no on-call, weekend, or holiday duty.VA Boston offers teaching opportunities for both medical students and Internal Medicine residents in the inpatient and outpatient arenas. An academic appointment is available and will be commensurate with accomplishments at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level at Harvard Medical School or Boston University School of Medicine.At least three years of experience in clinical leadership and experience in ambulatory clinic management are preferred. Candidates should also be experienced with population management, evidence-based guidelines, and adult learning principles. U.S. Citizenship and a full, unrestricted license are required.
