Center for Tribal Studies DirectorCenter for Tribal Studies ~ Tahlequah CampusJob SummaryThis position is responsible for directing the operations of the Center for Tribal Studies. MAJOR DUTIESInitiates and oversees the development and implementation of strategic plans and programming to support the recruitment and retention of American Indian/Indigenous student populations.Oversees the development and implementation of special programs, conferences, publications and events related to the Center’s mission including Indigenous Peoples Day, American Indian Heritage Month, the annual Symposium on the American Indian, the NSU American Indian Profile publication, and annual American Indian Graduation Convocation.Serves on the Council of Academic administrators and serves as a resource for University colleges and programs.Serves as a resource to guide and support academic research on American Indian / Indigenous population topics.Serves as Chair of the American Indian Heritage Committee.Establishes positive working relationships with tribal nations and communities.Oversees the management of program budgets and records.Supervises office personnel and related office operations.Develops and maintains relationships with other university departments and programs on matters related to constituent services.Writes and manages grants and other external funding.Provides support to advisors and student leaders of the American Indian focused student organizations on campus.Performs related duties as assigned.Knowledge Required By The PositionKnowledge of the history, policies, and best practices of American Indian Education.Knowledge of local, regional, and national demographics related to American Indian / Indigenous population.Knowledge of the sovereign status, laws and general government operations of tribal nations.Knowledge of program development and management principles.Knowledge of budget management principles and policies.Knowledge of grant acquisition and management principles.Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.Skill in developing, supporting and enhancing positive working relationships with tribal nations and communities.Skill in advocating for and assisting American Indian students in areas such as financing educational opportunities, internship and career opportunities, in additional to enhancing academic, social, and cultural experiences for American Indian/Indigenous students during their college experiences.Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs.Skill in decision making and problem solving.Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.Skill in oral and written communication.SUPERVISORY CONTROLSThe Provost assigns work in terms of center goals and objectives. The supervisor reviews work through conferences, reports, and observation of center activities.GUIDELINESGuidelines include the employee policy manual, report guidelines, human resources policies and procedures, grant guidelines, and university budget management principles. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application. This position develops center policies. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORKThe work consists of varied management duties. The variety of tasks to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.The purpose of this position is to direct the operations of the Center for Tribal Studies. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of center operations and enhances the relationships among American Indian/Indigenous student populations, the institution, and tribal communities.CONTACTSContacts are typically with co-workers; other university personnel, faculty, staff, students, parents, community and business leaders, tribal officials and representatives, government agents, personnel from other colleges and universities, and members of the general public.Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, to motivate or influence persons, or to justify, defend, or settle matters. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.The work is typically performed in an office.SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITYThis position has direct supervision over Student Programs Coordinator (1), Student Services Coordinator (1), student workers, and additional full-time and part-time grant personnel as required.Minimum QualificationsKnowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a master’s degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Oklahoma for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of and experience with working with students from American Indian/Indigenous cultures to facilitate their success in higher education settings.Experience with academic program development and American Indian-related education projects.Experience with tribal agencies and communities.Experience in securing external funding to support unit priorities and goals.Annual salary $62,088.00 with excellent benefits, including generous leave time.Anticipated hire date: 06/01/2026Applications will be accepted until: 05/31/2026NOTE: Posting will close to applicants at 11:59 p.m., CST, on the date above.
