Join After.com as Controller: A hands-on role for a systems-thinking CPA ready to build the financial engine for our next phase of growth. About After Services, Inc. After.com is the new home for funerals. We help families arrange and pre-plan simple cremations online in minutes with affordable, upfront pricing and absolutely no hidden costs or markups. Ever. We’re far from traditional, but we offer the same services and have the same licenses and credentials as traditional funeral homes. Our internet-first experience saves you time, money, and energy for what matters—celebrating the life of your loved one. Description We Are Looking For Someone Who: Can Simplify Complexity: You can explain how a business makes money in 30 seconds or less. Is Paranoid About Gaps: You know exactly what "keeps you up at night" regarding controls and can identify vulnerabilities before they become issues. Is a Systems Thinker: You don't just fix a problem; you fix the system that allowed the problem to exist. Overview After.com is a high-growth, online-first death care company operating in multiple states with ~10,000 transactions in the first half of 2025 alone. As we prepare for our Series B raise and launch Before.com, we need a CPA who thrives in the "startup grind" but possesses the foresight to build Institutional Grade Financials. This is a hands-on, strategic role. You will be the key individual contributor who builds credibility into our financials, bridging the gap between operational reporting and GAAP compliance. You aren't just managing a team; you are the architect of our financial future. Key Responsibilities Fiduciary & Trust Mastery: Oversee the transition as we move to an MGA model for Before.com. You will manage fiduciary/premium trust accounts, maintaining a sophisticated understanding of restricted funds and the "float" between payment and service delivery. Forensic Accrual Modeling: With hundreds of lagging invoices from crematories and government offices, you will move us beyond basic AP. You’ll build high-volume accrual models to ensure we know our real-time margins regardless of when a vendor bills us. Systems Integration Architecture: Partner with Dev to build the "missing link" between our CRM (Pipedrive) and our Ledger (QBO). You will architect audit-proof data flows to automate JEs and prevent "fat-finger" data entry errors. Own the Close: Drive the monthly and quarterly close process end-to-end. You will reconcile management reports to GAAP financials and ensure every line item is diligence-ready for investors and auditors. Strategic Reporting: Partner with leadership on cash, margin, and geographic reporting to drive operational clarity across our various sub-entities. Tech Stack Ownership: Fully manage and optimize our modern fintech stack: Ramp, QBO, Mercury, and Gusto. Requirements Certification: Active CPA is required. Experience: 6–10+ years of progressive accounting experience (Mix of Public Accounting + High-Growth Startup preferred). Audit Roots: Background in external audit is essential. You know how to prepare for a rigorous, top-tier examination. Modern Toolset: Absolute proficiency in Ramp, QuickBooks Online, Mercury, Treasury accounts, and Gusto. Industry Experience (Ranked): 1. Insurance (MGA or Carrier): Premium trust accounts and reserves. 2. Healthcare: High-volume, lagging facility/provider invoicing. 3. Logistics or Enterprise SaaS: Complex revenue recognition and pass-through costs. Proximity: Must be local to Utah, and able to work out of the Orem HQ location daily. Salary $110,000 - $130,000 per year
