Find out how you can make a difference with a career at Society. Society Insurance is seeking a Coverage & Corporate Counsel to join our Legal Services team. This position will provide legal representation for insured and/or the company before courts, arbitration panels, and administrative bodies to resolve cases. This includes preparing legal pleadings, motions, statements and trial briefs; conducting examinations of legal and claims records; consulting claim parties; and negotiating settlements with plaintiffs’ attorney. About the Role Partners with claims operation in all disciplines providing legal support, guidance, opinions, and coverage counsel. Attends all large loss, complex loss, file conferencing to weigh in and to be a legal resource. Works with the Assistant General Counsel to select, retain, manage, and evaluate outside counsel. Coaches claims department on litigation handling, corporate litigation, contracts, and legal matters. Advises employees on their litigation handling; works with Technical Specialists to identify and develop training opportunities for department staff, and provides mentoring. Works with Outside Legal Counsel on handling cases as lead counsel. This handling may include attending/taking depositions & mediations/arbitrations, participating in motions, pleadings, and briefing of cases, and if necessary, trying cases as lead counsel. Evaluates losses of varied complexity and negotiates settlements with plaintiffs' attorney. This role does not have independent authority on reserves and payments, rather, this would be done with claim approval on a case-by-case basis. Develops, maintains, and monitors litigation performance measures and key performance metrics in partnership with claim department and business analytics and reporting. Works with claims in assigned states to develop state strategies regarding suit-reduction programs and litigation management. Researches the legal environment in possible expansion states as part of our state expansion program. Provides legal updates to the Claims Department for assigned states. Evaluates defense attorney performance through annual attorney file audits and performance reviews. Supports the management of all non-claim related legal matters for the company including regulatory filings and compliance for company matters, transactions, and business operations. Provides the business with timely and legal advice on law, regulation, and industry standards and best practices relating to issues impacting the Company’s risk products through the entire product life cycle, from product innovation, design, and development to the payment of claims. What it Will Take A Juris Doctor Law degree from an accredited university and member in good standing of the local bar association. Licensed to practice law in Wisconsin state and federal courts. Extensive knowledge of insurance coverage law in the following states: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Tennessee, Georgia, and Texas. At least 5 years of insurance coverage law experience with a property casualty insurance carrier. Knowledge on property and casualty commercial products, rates, forms, coverages, compliance, and regulations. Travel is required to attend depositions, motions, and mediations as needed. 10 or more years of in-house legal experience in the commercial insurance industry highly desirable. Coverage litigation experience highly desirable. Experience working with regulatory and government agencies highly desirable.
