Lead Electrical Engineer

Overview In this Lead Electrical Engineer role, you drive electrical design for mission-critical, commercial, and institutional facilities from concept through construction. You will lead a small engineering team, collaborate with project managers and clients, and ensure code-compliant, constructible designs aligned with project scope and budget. You’ll perform and oversee analyses, develop deliverables, and support field commissioning and startup activities. This position offers leadership in a stable, design-focused firm with opportunities on Chicagoland projects and limited travel. You will shape standard tools and practices while staying current with codes and industry trends. ResponsibilitiesServe as technical lead for electrical system design across all project phasesDevelop and review electrical designs (low/medium voltage, generators/UPS, lighting, fire/life safety, grounding)Perform/oversee short circuit, coordination, arc flash studies, load calculations, cable ampacity and fault current analysesProduce/review deliverables (one-line diagrams, specs, equipment schedules, floor plans, BIM/Revit)Lead, mentor, and develop a small team of engineers; delegate tasks and monitor progressSupport resource planning and workload forecasting; conduct internal QA/QCMaintain client and stakeholder relationships; lead design meetings and coordinate with multidisciplinary teamsSupport proposal development and technical input during preconstructionConduct site surveys, respond to RFIs, review submittals; support commissioning and startupStay current with industry trends, improve design tools and methods Key requirementsBachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with a focus on building electrical systemsMinimum 7–10+ years of electrical engineering design experience in commercial, institutional, or mission-critical facilities (data centers preferred)Professional Engineer (PE) license required or obtainable within 12 monthsExperience leading technical teams and coordinating multi-discipline projectsProficiency in Revit, AutoCAD; SKM/ETAP or similar software; Microsoft OfficeStrong knowledge of NEC, Chicago Electrical Code, NFPA, IBC, IECCExcellent communication, organization, and time-management skillsAbility to travel to project/construction sites as neededcommunicationleadershipcollaborationRevitAutoCADSKM
