Network System Engineer (San Jose)
The Network & Systems Engineer is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and maintaining Technology Credit Union's (Tech CU's) enterprise network and systems infrastructure to ensure secure, resilient, and highly available banking operations. This role provides ongoing maintenance and support across network, server, and hybrid cloud platforms, supporting member facing services and internal business operations.The position plays a critical role in enterprise initiatives including Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), hybrid cloud connectivity, and disaster recovery. The engineer exercises independent judgment in security, availability, and maintains accountability for regulatory readiness, operational resilience, and enterprise risk reduction. This role participates in on-call rotation to support high availability of critical systems.ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPSReports To: Director, IT OperationsManages Directly: NoneMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIESEssential Duties• Exercise sound judgment and make timely decisions to address performance issues using advanced knowledge of enterprise systems and financial technology platforms.• Ensure all business-critical functions and applications are documented, maintained, and fully operational across production and lower environments.• Perform data querying and scripting to implement new capabilities and enhance system functionality.• Notify IT leadership of failures or risks that could impact business operations or member experience.• Maintain data integrity and escalate any data quality gaps to leadership for remediation.• Develop and implement automation to streamline manual processes and improve efficiency.• Manage processes for application version updates, database refreshes, and environment synchronization.• Partner with other technical groups to ensure seamless integration between core and enterprise systems.• Respond to internal customer requests accurately and within established SLA timeframes.• Escalate production issues appropriately and engage technical resources when necessary.• Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for processes, batch jobs, and workflows to support Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and cross-training.• Stay current on technology trends and vendor updates through conferences, training, and webinars.• Complete required educational courses as assigned by the organization.• Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical incidents and ensure high availability of enterprise systems.• support the Zero Trust / Always-On VPN program, including network segmentation, identity-based access enforcement, and decommissioning of legacy VPN solutions.• maintain secure site-to-site and remote access connectivity for core banking systems, internal applications, and approved third-party vendors.• Monitor, analyze, and optimize network and system performance to ensure high availability and fault tolerance for 24x7 banking operations.• administer Windows Server infrastructure and core services (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy) with a focus on security, resilience, and lifecycle management.• Manage virtualization and compute platforms (VMware, Hyper-V, and/or cloud equivalents), including capacity planning and performance optimization.• support hybrid cloud connectivity (primarily Azure), integrating identity services, network security controls, and on-premise infrastructure.• maintain disaster recovery network paths, failover connectivity, and recovery dependencies for critical applications.• Partner with Information Security to engineer controls aligned with NCUA, FFIEC, and Tech CU security standards, including least-privilege access and segmentation.• Act as a technical lead during regulatory examinations, audits, and vendor risk assessments, providing authoritative infrastructure input.• Notify IT leadership of issues or risks that could impact system availability, security posture, or member experience.• Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical network and system incidents.Work Schedule• Full-time; typically, 40+ hours/week• Flexible within core business hours, Pacific Time, M-F• Participates in "On-Call" rotation within the Team.• Periodic extended early morning or late evening hours, and weekends, in response to needs of the systems being supported, not always with advance notice.Workplace Essentials• Supports Tech CU's Mission and Vision and consistently demonstrates Tech CU's Values (Accelerate, Collaborate, Innovate and Cultivate).• Meets with manager on a regular basis to discuss goal alignment, performance metrics, and development plans.• Complies with Tech CU policies and procedures.• Upholds employee Code of Conduct and Business Ethics and ensures confidentiality of the workplace.• Complies with requirements imposed by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.• Adheres to internal control and security measures designed to ensure regulatory compliance and mitigate losses and errors.MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONSEducation: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or equivalent experience.Experience:• Skilled in troubleshooting and maintaining local and cloud-based applications and services. Experience with backup systems, application monitoring, and status reporting to ensure high availability and compliance.• Ability to develop scripts and automation for data querying and process optimization.• 5+ years of experience supporting, and operating enterprise network and systems infrastructure in a regulated environment.• 5+ years of advanced network engineering experience, including routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, and segmentation.• 5+ years administering Windows Server environments and core infrastructure services (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy).• Experience with virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V) and hybrid cloud connectivity (Azure preferred).• Demonstrated experience supporting disaster recovery, business continuity, and regulatory audit requirements.• Experience providing Tier 3 / engineering-level escalation support.Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:• Strong understanding of enterprise network and systems engineering concepts and best practices.• Working knowledge of Zero Trust security models and identity-centric access controls.• Ability to independently analyze, design, and implement infrastructure solutions with enterprise-wide impact.• Strong documentation skills, including network diagrams and architecture artifacts.• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.• Highly self-motivated and capable of operating independently in a complex, evolving environment.Licensing/Certifications: None required. Industry certifications such as CCNP, network security certifications, or Microsoft infrastructure certifications are preferred.Travel: May be required to travel to Tech CU locations outside of headquarters, typically with advance notice. May be required to attend offsite meetings or events, including some overnight travel, typically with advance notice.Typical Working Conditions: Office environment with interaction with a variety of internal and external parties.
