Software Engineer I

Job DescriptionThis position is for a Software Engineer I within the eCRMS – Customer 360 (C360) Engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to the design and development of large-scale, cloud-native, event-driven, reactive applications that enable a global, 360-degree view of the customer.As a Software Engineer I, you will work as part of a collaborative team contributing to full-stack development, including backend services (APIs and microservices), frontend development using React, and cloud-based solutions on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and AWS. You will gain hands-on experience building scalable systems while learning industry best practices.ResponsibilitiesHow Will You Make an Impact in This Role?Contribute to the development of microservices that support a rapidly growing data platformAssist in building scalable APIs using modern programming frameworksSupport the development of tools, automation, and instrumentation to improve system reliabilityWork on services that enable real-time data processing and analyticsCollaborate with team members to improve the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of data pipelinesParticipate in code reviews, testing, and debugging to ensure high-quality software deliveryWork on cross-functional initiatives and collaborate with engineers across teamsLearn and apply best practices in software development, system design, and cloud technologiesQualificationsEducation Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and/or comparable experienceKnowledge of distributed (multi-tiered) systems, algorithms, NoSQL and relational databasesKnowledge of the core tools used in the planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining of assigned application(s)Minimum Qualifications1–3 years of experience (or equivalent internships/projects) in building applications using object-oriented programming (Java or similar technologies)Basic understanding of REST APIs and microservices architectureFamiliarity with Java and writing clean, maintainable codeUnderstanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design principlesExposure to relational databases and/or NoSQL technologies (e.g., Cassandra, Couchbase)Familiarity with version control systems such as GitStrong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new technologiesGood communication and collaboration skills Preferred QualificationsExposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or GCPFamiliarity with frontend technologies such as ReactBasic knowledge of event-driven architecture or messaging systems (e.g., Kafka, Vert.x)Experience with build tools such as Maven or GradleAwareness of containerization technologies like Docker or OpenShiftExposure to Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL, or Python Interest in data engineering, machine learning, or AI conceptsEmployment eligibility to work with American Express in the United States is required as the company will not pursue visa sponsorship for these PositionsAbout UsAt American Express, our culture is built on a 175-year history of innovation, shared values and Leadership Behaviors, and an unwavering commitment to back our customers, communities, and colleagues.
