Welding Laboratory AssistantThe Welding Laboratory Assistant works under the direct supervision of faculty members and performs routine standardized laboratory work requiring close attention to detailed procedures in the preparation and basic maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, inventory, and requisition of supplies. This position will also assists faculty in supervision of students assigned to laboratories and other related duties.Job duties include setting up and storing laboratory materials, equipment, and other related items; following all safety regulations when preparing and setting-up of laboratory exercises and demonstrations; maintaining the laboratory storage facility and an orderly storage area; storing and disposing of hazardous wastes using procedures that insure safety and legal restrictions are met; maintaining documentation in an organized, accessible fashion; assisting with maintaining the laboratory in a clean and orderly fashion; maintaining records on pieces of equipment; preparing, receiving, unpacking, and storing apparatus, supplies, and special equipment, maintaining a permanent inventory record system of the kind, number, and costs of articles; consulting instructor about making minor repairs as needed and/or coordinating repairs with outside agencies as required; assisting faculty in the supervision of students in the laboratory and the oversight of their progress; documenting progress as needed; assisting in preparation of appropriate laboratory budget, assuring that expenditures are within budget, collect specifications and bids and meet with department agents to approve bid items; conducting college business in a professional and ethical manner that includes the College's core values of integrity, excellence, dignity, accountability, environmental responsibility and global citizenry; communicating effectively in a professional, tactful and courteous manner with students, employees, faculty, and the general public; ensuring that all activities are conducted within the established College policies, FERPA guidelines and other applicable laws pertaining to employment and education; performing assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.Must reside in Virginia, Maryland or District of Columbia.Required KSAs: Basic welding knowledge: Understanding of welding processes, equipment, and safety procedures. Welding equipment maintenance: Ability to clean, inspect welding machines and leads. Material handling: Skill in safely handling and storing various metals and welding supplies. Safety protocols: Knowledge of workplace safety regulations and practices. Ensuring safety and security requirements are met in the classroom and laboratory areas. Assist faculty members with classroom instruction, exams, record keeping, adherence to safety procedures, tracking attendance and other miscellaneous tasks related to instruction. Cleaning/preparing labs as needed. Ability to stand for extended periods and lift moderately heavy objects. Ability to adapt to changing tasks and work environments. Ability to work evenings and occasional weekend hours. Mechanical aptitude: Mechanically inclined, basic knowledge of tools.Minimum requirements: One to two semesters of welding experience in the classroom or as a welder is required. Experience with basic software programs.
