Assistant Cook

SOUTH HADLEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION Position: Assistant Cook - South Hadley High School Job Goal: 1. The Assistant Cook is responsible for assisting the Senior Cook and other food service staff in order to provide students and staff with nutritious meals in an efficient, clean, friendly and service-oriented environment. Supervision: Reports to the Senior Cook Experience and Training: 1. High school diploma or vocational school diploma with concentration in food preparation or additional courses in cooking 2. Three years work experience with one year in a supervisory capacity of any equivalent combination of education and experience preferred 3. Serve Safe certification preferred (must maintain after employment) 4. Working knowledge of food preparation for large number of people 5. Excellent communication skills to supervise others and communicate properly and efficiently with the entire staff and students 6. Efficiency for safe working with kitchen equipment 7. Punctual and good attendance 8. Courteous approach to all staff issues 9. Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate Performance Responsibilities: 1. Assist the Senior Cook in the preparation of food and beverages 2. Exercise good judgment in regards to food safety and hygiene in order to protect students and faculty from food contamination 3. Substitutes for the Senior Cook in her/his absence 4. Assist with overall kitchen duties if needed 5. Prepare day’s meal including breakfast and lunch and prep meals for the rest of the week 6. Determine if the finished product is of best quality both in flavor and appearance before it is served 7. Determine the quantities of each food to be prepared daily 8. Maintain established procedures regarding activities such as personal hygiene, food safety and cleanliness in the kitchen 9. Check food shipments into the school, signing invoices only after each order has been verified 10. Inventory supplies and place orders for necessary supplies 11. Attend training sessions and meetings as required Terms of Employment: As agreed upon through union negotiated contract Evaluation: To be completed annually by the Director of Food Services Physical Requirements: The position requires a high amount of standing and walking. Activities also include moderate physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, pulling and lifting of objects. The position requires frequent lifting of objects up to 50 pounds but occasionally up to 70 pounds. Environmental Conditions: The employee is required to work indoors (in the kitchen). The regular chemical solvents used are cleaning products used in the kitchen.
