Civil Construction Estimator
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Civil Construction Estimator to produce accurate, timely cost estimates for land development, roadway, earthwork, and utility projects. The Estimator will analyze plans and specifications, assess resources and risks, collaborate with project managers and subcontractors, and support bid strategy to win profitable work while ensuring compliance with company and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Review plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents to develop complete, competitive estimates for land development, roadway, earthwork, and utility projects.
Perform quantity takeoffs using plans, site maps, and digital tools; verify unit pricing and summarize bid packages.
Prepare detailed cost estimates including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor quotes, permits, and contingencies; develop cost models and bid summaries.
Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier proposals; build and maintain strong vendor relationships to secure competitive pricing.
Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and field staff to validate assumptions, refine scopes of work, and identify constructability or value engineering opportunities.
Analyze historical cost data and project performance to improve future estimating accuracy and update cost databases.
Develop and present bid recommendations, assumptions, and pricing strategies to leadership; support final bid submittal and contract negotiations.
Ensure estimates comply with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements and reflect project schedule and risk mitigation.
Maintain organized documentation of estimates, takeoffs, assumptions, and bid communications for auditability and knowledge transfer.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
Minimum 37 years of estimating experience in heavy civil or site development construction with demonstrated success on land development, roadway, earthwork, and utility projects.
Proven proficiency in quantity takeoffs and estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, HCSS HeavyBid, Trimble, PlanSwift) and strong Excel skills.
Solid understanding of construction means and methods, production rates, equipment productivity, and unit pricing for earthwork and utility installation.
Experience preparing subcontractor scopes, evaluating bids, and developing comprehensive bid packages.
Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills with attention to detail and ability to work under bid deadlines.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate across disciplines and present cost assumptions to leadership.
Valid drivers license and willingness to visit project sites as needed.
