Job SummaryThe Lamar University Police Department (LUPD) is seeking a dependable and professional Police Dispatcher to join our team in a part-time capacity. Dispatchers are responsible for the general operation of the Communications Center, including answering emergency and non-emergency calls, coordinating responses, and monitoring campus safety systems. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitorsEssential Job FunctionsWhat You’ll Do – Position ResponsibilitiesOperate department two-way radio equipment and maintain radio logsAnswer telephone calls and provide accurate information to callersDetermine when calls require emergency action and relay critical information to patrol unitsCoordinate police, fire, ambulance, and other emergency responsesMonitor alarm systems for unauthorized entry to university buildingsOperate computer terminals for record-keeping and dispatchingMaintain compliance with university standards, policies, and proceduresProvide excellent customer service and promote positive public relationsPerform other duties as assignedMinimum and Desired QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED requiredExperience or training sufficient to perform dispatch dutiesAbility to read and interpret departmental policies, regulations, and reportsKnowledge of computers and two-way radio operationStrong communication skills, both verbal and writtenAbility to remain calm under pressure and exercise sound judgmentWillingness to work nights, weekends, and emergencies as neededRequires sitting for extended periods and responding to calls in real-timeNight, weekend, and emergency shift work requiredCertifications RequiredMust successfully complete 40-hour TLETS – Basic Telecommunications and TCIC/NCIC procedure training within one year of appointment, as determined by the Texas Department of Public SafetyPreferred QualificationsPrevious dispatch or law enforcement communications experienceFamiliarity with university or campus environmentsLamar University is An Equal Opportunity EmployerLamar University is proud to provide employment preference to veteran applicants in accordance with Texas 805 Government Code, Section 657.003.This position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information.
