Program Supervisor – Future Environmental Leaders Initiative (Summer Position)Location: Jersey City, NJDates: July 6 – August 14Schedule: Monday–Friday, ~8:00 AM – 4:00 PMCompensation: $25–$30/hour Team Wilderness is seeking a Program Supervisor to support our Future Environmental Leaders Initiative in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ DEP). This is a paid summer leadership role working closely with a cohort of youth (ages 16–20) as they explore environmental careers, build leadership skills, and complete a community-based project in Jersey City.This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about youth development and the environment, and who enjoys being in the field, building relationships, and creating meaningful experiences for young people.Role OverviewThe Program Supervisor will serve as the primary adult leader for the Jersey City cohort, supporting youth throughout the program while coordinating logistics, facilitating activities, and helping create a positive, engaging group dynamic.While DEP staff will lead programming Tuesday through Thursday, the Supervisor plays a key role in supporting youth engagement, managing the group, and leading key program components on Mondays and Fridays.The Program Supervisor must be available to participate in required paid trainings prior to the start of the program, including:Two training days in June led by the NJ DEPOne virtual trainingOne in-person training at NJ DEP Headquarters in Trenton, NJLate June orientation sessions with Team Wilderness staff, including youth participant orientation daysKey ResponsibilitiesYouth Engagement & Group LeadershipBuild strong, supportive relationships with participantsFoster a safe, inclusive, and respectful group environmentSupport youth in developing confidence, teamwork, and leadership skillsAddress group dynamics and behavior proactively and constructivelyProgram Support (Tuesday–Thursday)Attend and support DEP-led sessions and field experiencesHelp manage transitions, logistics, and youth participationEncourage curiosity, engagement, and professionalism among participantsCommunity Project Leadership (Mondays)Lead weekly community project days Facilitate park clean-ups and support youth project efforts in the pollinator gardenHelp youth connect their work to broader environmental and community impactEnsure safety and organization during outdoor work activitiesProfessional Development Facilitation (Fridays)Plan and lead weekly professional development workshopsTopics may include resume building, public speaking, teamwork, and career explorationCreate interactive, youth-centered sessions that build real-world skillsLogistics & CommunicationTrack attendance and communicate with Team Wilderness staff as neededCoordinate supplies and materials for program activitiesCommunicate professionally with partners, including DEP staff and community organizationsWho We’re Looking ForExperience working with youth (formal or informal)Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skillsComfortable leading groups and facilitating discussionsInterest in environmental issues, conservation, or sustainabilityAbility to work outdoors in varying weather conditionsFlexible, proactive, and team-oriented mindsetYou do not need to be an expert in environmental topics—curiosity, willingness to learn, and enthusiasm go a long way in this role.
