Wildfire Environmental Science Intern

This remote internship focuses on wildfire science and operations support. You will help ground truth and improve our wildfire models by assembling and cleaning fire histories, weather, and fuels data, validating model outputs against past incidents, and preparing map layers and briefings for partner agencies. Depending on timing and safety approvals, you may support controlled and post fire field work such as fuels and moisture observations and photo points to improve calibration. You will also contribute to practical guidance for communities and agencies on risk and readiness.Core activities include:Curate datasets for wildfire behavior and risk: fuels, weather, RAWS stations, terrain, and historical perimetersAnalyze and summarize conditions that drive spread and spotting, and compare against model outputsPrepare GIS layers and simple dashboards to support operations and after action reviewsDraft short memos on findings, uncertainties, and recommendations for product and partner teamsQualifications:Coursework or experience in wildfire science, fire ecology, or related earth sciencesResearch and analytical skills with an emphasis on environmental and geospatial dataFamiliarity with GIS tools such as QGIS or ArcGIS and basic data analysis in Python or RUnderstanding of fuels, topography, and weather factors that influence fire behaviorComfort working with satellite and weather products such as Sentinel, Landsat, VIIRS, HRRR, RAWSClear written communication and the ability to translate technical results into practical insightsAbility to work independently in a remote setting and collaborate across time zonesPursuing a degree in Environmental Science, Earth Science, Forestry, Geography, or a related fieldNice to have:Exposure to LANDFIRE fuels, WIMS, or incident command conceptsField experience with fuels or moisture observations, post fire assessments, or air quality monitoringRelevant safety training for any field support that may be approvedThis position is unpaid and voluntary
